Phonte Ain’t Happy about Kanye’s 808’s

This was kinda surprising to me:

Via a recent interview, Little Brother’s Phonte surprisingly told an interviewer that he wasn’t feeling West’s attempt at singing, whatsoever. “I’ve heard … pretty much … most of the Kanye West album, and I didn’t like it. I was just like ‘Get the f*** outta here,’” said the rapper.

“I personally did not like the album. I thought it was … I honestly thought it was an act of cowardice. I just think that if you’re gonna make the creative leaps to sing, then really sing. Let your voice come out, and let people hear all the idiosyncrasies in your voice because that’s what makes you uniquely you,” Phonte continued.

According to the rapper, after initially hearing West’s 808s and Heartbreak, he was reminded of another popular artist who utilized the auto-tune effect. Ultimately, Phonte says his tune of the robotic effect takes away from your original voice, and that isn’t a good thing.

“Imagine if Aretha Franklin would’ve used auto-tune over ‘Respect.’ It’s like all the soul and actual grit and emotion would’ve been gone. That’s what it’s like to me. I heard [808s and Heartbreak] and was like ‘Ok, this n**** is just biting T-Pain,’ ” he said.

While he understood what West was trying to do with the album’s release, he felt the way the producer did it should’ve been different. “It’s like he really wanted to do more, but he just really don’t got the talent to do that sh**,” Phonte concluded.

What do ya’ll think about this? I mean I wasn’t feelin Ye’s album either but I dunno if it’s really anyone’s place to speak this away about it. Your thoughts?

    As a listener and a Kanye West fan, 808s was an “epic fail” for me…and I don’t normally use that ridiculous expression. I think “Heartless” is the only song that I gave the opportunity to grow on me (and now I like it). The others were too painful to listen to more than 1.5 times each.

    I agree that if he was going to sing, he should have put sincere effort into that. (Maybe he feels like he did?) I’m not into monotone brooding under the guise of singing. Is that harsh? I mean, I’m not a singer either…lol

    Oh, and auto-tune needs to vanish effective immediately.

    Why not?? If anything kanye made the album for himself as he stated numerous times, he doesn;t honestly care what we think, so why shouldn;t another person be allowed
    to share their opinion on his work? I’m 50/50 on the album i think their
    are some amaze tracks, while others fall short. But the brotha has a point
    on soul coming through your music, and auto-tune taking away from that.
    In my humble opinion I think kanye’s ACTUAL singing voice is nice, I like it it
    really does have some soul in it. Spaceship anyone?

    Kanye’s decision to use that device caused a backlash. Plus him embracing ignorance and doing tracks with Khalid isn’t consistent with his “creativity” argument in using the auto-tune. How can one claim to be ground-breaking by using such a trendy object to enhance, or digitize your voice? Plus, the album was a departure from anything relevant, memorable, or at the very least head nodding. For that sin, he should be crucified! Agree with ‘Te 100%!

    WHOA!!!! Pause, what does Kanye doing songs with Khaled have to do with anything. Correct me if I’m wrong but Ye’s been doin songs talking about fatt asses since day 1! And yes, 808’s is just off but Phonte is just going for it and it is very much over kill. How many rockers were able to experiment and not crucified (too much) for it. As time passes 808’s will just be seen as one of Kanye’s “other” albums.

    ***Im also confused, which Khaled song is sssooooo bad, Grammy Family or Go Hard? A good song is a good song so chill the fuck!

    the first time i heard 808’s i was a bit let down (being a hiphop head)…and i def wasnt a fan of that auto tune…the more i played the album though, the more it grew on me and the more i felt like i understood what kanye was doing…its not an album i could bump everyday but its def one you can feel if you got lady beef…lol…i think overall it was a decent album…and after messing with the autotune on protools i respect the album even more.

    There’s so much other music in the world that it would be a waste of time to even consider listening to that album. I tried about 4 or 5 times, I end up going back to his other albums.

    But on the reals, Phonte is hatin’ like he has a grudge, and I’m loving it!

    i am a diehard kanye fan, but i was very disappointed in the album. but i respect the nigga for still releasing and being confidence in something so dreadful. me personally, i wouldnt have been able to do the same. i dont think dude should be talkin down like that. let the nigga keep getting his money. after rappers get so much, their rapping goes down hill n e way

    first of all, this entire thread is ridiculous because Amanda Diva is a person who has made an entire career (so to speak) of providing social commentary on various issues, regardless of her expertise or knowledge of said issues. so for her to question whether phonte’s comments are appropriate is a moot point. second, the only reason i even came to this site is because i googled amanda diva after seeing her on vh-1 making an unwarranted comment on janet jackson’s secret marriage in the early nineties. people say stupid shit when they are given a forum, as evidenced by the preceding comments, and this one as well.

    I am a big Little Brother fan. Anyone that knows LB should know that Phonte has decent pipes and is an MC squared. Let’s face it-Percy Miracles sounds better than Kanye!!!

    You have to understand that Kanye, and his writing partner, Rhymefest, are friends with LB. If you follow the underground, you know that Rhymefest has done joints with LB (and Slum Village on the same track…fire!!!). Given that Phonte is decent singer, die hard MC and more than casual acquaintance of Kanye…and considering Phonte’s history of commentary on hip hop in general…it should come as no surprise he would say some thing about that wack album Kanye dropped. Another autotune auto-crash.

    If Ye spent more time on his music and less time trying to be left of center ala weird clothes, haircuts, shades and tantrums…maybe the album would have been better. At the same time, I can’t cast any stones. I didn’t lose my mother. And considering the way his mother died…well who knows what’s going on in Ye’s head.

    UH. Phonte had a valid point about the whole autotune deal, but you can’t discredit an artist trying to explore self expression just cause of the instrument. The emotion behind it was real and the beats that came with the album were filled with the same intensity. (Don’t lie to yourself and say the production on that album was not fire..)

    I mean, Foreign Exchange’s “Leave it All Behind” was a great album, but not because Phonte can really sang.. but simply because he put the effort to make a great album.. It’s not fair to say that Kanye didn’t put the same effort. Maybe not on his voice.. but in everything else. ( 808 does not at all compare to leave it all behind though)

    It’s fair to say that Kanye should not have DEPENDED on the autotune, but damn, I sympathize with the man. He put himself OUT THERE, and I’m sure there may have been some insecurities about what his voice sounds like. I for one LOVE 808’s & Heartbreaks. I feel where Kanye is coming from. I understand what Phonte is saying but he went for the jugular with that one. That’s unnecessary.
