The Albino Rap phenom has a case of the Red, White, and Blues

Minneapolis-bred emcee Brother Ali released his newest long-player, the highly-anticipated The Undisputed Truth to critical-acclaim and widespread fan praise last month. I was one of the many folks anticipating Ali’s next move since he dropped the Champion EP some three years ago, so I greeted his official follow up to the stellar 2003 LP Shadows on the Sun with open arms and ears. And though I dug the record well enough there was something about it that was lacking. Not lacking in quality, but in substance. And I don’t mean “substance” in the sense of weighty subject-matter. Ali is plenty serious. I mean that the album somehow doesn’t seem as beefy as I’d anticipated. Even at 15 tracks, the record just seemed incomplete to me, as if it was missing something. I even started feeling like maybe I was missing something! But I’ve since been presented with conclusive evidence that something is missing from The Undisputed Truth.

The evidence is Ali’s new single “Uncle Sam Goddamn,” which he’s releasing in three different limited edition versions. Each version of the “Uncle Sam Goddamn” 12” comes on colored vinyl (red, white, and blue), and each color variation comes with a different exclusive b-side track! The three new tracks, “No Alibis,” “Palm the Joker,” and “Talkin’ My Shit” are exactly what was missing from The Undisputed Truth. Their presence, or lack thereof, doesn’t make or break the album. But I think they would have provided the little extra “umph” that could have turned the energy up and made the sonic diversity and lyrical variety on the album complete. This means the limited edition 12′’s are essential coppage for anybody who loved The Undisputed Truth or who happens to be a Brother Ali fan in general.

“No Alibis,” featuring former Micranots member I Self Divine, is a fiery indictment of phony revolutionaries who can’t even make a positive change within themselves, much less the world, delivered over blaring horns and strings, and accented with scratches of X-Clan’s Brother J. “Talkin’ My Shit” is exactly what the title indicates, a braggadocios smack-fest, where Ali talks shit in his own uniquely acerbic-but-humble fashion over a pimped-out Disc-Funk beat courtesy of Ant. But my favorite of the three new tracks is “Palm the Joker,” a composition where Ali does what he does best, elucidate the hopes, fears, concerns and struggles of the disenchanted and disenfranchised, over a majestically bouncy track that wouldn’t have seemed out of place on Jay-Z’s Black Album.

In my estimation “Palm The Joker” would have been a perfect way to close out The Undisputed Truth, and not including these tracks (or the other b-side-only cut “Original King”) on the album was a missed opportunity. But I’m thankful that Ali and Rhymesayers Entertainment at least gave fans the opportunity to hear them in this, decidedly colorful, context.
