Records At Random Vol. 10 - Horace Andy In The Light


A lot of youngsters probably know Horace Andy as “that Reggae dude” who worked with Trip-Hop vanguards Massive Attack. But he’s actually a respected musical veteran with a long and storied career. He’d already been around for years by the time he released the In The Light LP in 1977. The album reveals an artist confident in his songwriting and vocal abilities, laying down sharp socio-political criticisms, spouting pro-Rasta rhetoric, chanting down Babylon, extolling the virtues (and addictive properties) of herb, and even romancing the womenfolk, over rhythms provided by a team of musicians including such notables as Augustus Pablo on keys, Leroy Sibbles on bass, and Leroy “Horsemouth” Wallace (who is probably responsible for many of the killer fills) on drums.

That said In The Light is sort of middle-of-the-road for me. Don’t get me wrong, Andy has an incredible, haunting, voice, and the musicians set fire to the tracks, throwing a surprising melodic, rhythmic and stylistic change-up now and then. But some of the rhythms can be a little repetitive and similar sounding, reinforcing the stereotype that Reggae artists can sometimes be faceless and interchangeable. Thankfully though, when Andy and company hit, they hit hard, and even the misses are just outside the bullseye. So it’s still a solid listen for real Reggae fans and it’s broad appeal makes it a good starting-point for casual listeners to get into less-widely-known artists.

Most of the aforementioned change-ups come in the form of the musicianship of the participating sessioneers, particularly on the intros of a couple of songs which are something of a sonic curve-ball, lobbing unusual grooves (for a Reggae album) at listeners. The album opens with just such an oddity, the song “Do You Love My Music,” which has a Santana-esque intro, replete with wailing electric guitar soloing, a loping organ groove, and soulful horns. The only clue that it’s a Reggae tune you’re listening to before the songs skanking main groove drops is the distinct snare roll that sets it all off. Another crazily funky intro graces “Rome,” my favorite cut on the LP, which extols the virtues of Zion and warns Western “sinners” that Jah is coming. A handful of tracks, such as “Hey There Woman,” “Problems,” and “If” are notable for subtle, melodically interesting instrumentation, highlighted by creepy keyboard flourishes and instances where the keyboardist, bassist and horn section just “click,” that give them a sweaty sense of paranoid foreboding.

All in all though most of the songs have a very familiar, easy-rolling, post-Marley vibe. The musicianship of the band is fantastic, but they’re playing (admittedly playing the hell out of) very straightforward rhythms. Which is fine, because it’s not a dub album meant to show off the music or crazy studio effects. It’s a vocal album, meant to showcase Horace Andy and his distinct falsetto (which should be enough to grab your attention and hold it for the duration), and it does that really well.
