“Young girl, get out of my mind…”

I’ve mentioned both these girls in passing here in the not-too-distant past. But since they’ve both got new singles out I feel obliged to give them a little extra shine. They’re both part of a growing crop of ethnically diverse, distinctly underground, female Rap artists who don’t necessarily fit into the traditional Hip-Hop underground scene (dominated by a demand for lyrical dexterity and adherence to a certain cultural code) but conversely aren’t poised to break through to mainstream Rap audiences who might favor simpler fare either (due to a lack of “street cred” and images that defy stereotyping).

I won’t front, Chicago’s Kid Sister, who is literally the “kid sister” of Flosstradamus‘ J2K, first caught my eye because she’s cute. But when I heard her “I-just-got-my-nails-did” pro-girl anthem “Pro Nails” (which Kanye West recently co-signed, including a remix featuring a verse of his own on his Can’t Tell me Nothing mixtape) I became convinced that if she wasn’t already “the next big thing” that she needed to be. Her first official single, the XXXChange-produced “Control,” out now on Fools Gold, just solidified that opinion in my mind. A combination of buzzing Electro and strip-club Hip-Hop (”ladies in the front row, touch them toes, twerk, roll, stop, control…” goes the chorus), with melodic Synthpop-influenced chords on the bridge, and a manic soul-clap on the hook, “Control” should be controlling sweaty asses on dancefloors everywhere as the Summer heats up.

From Paris, France (by way of Miami, Florida), Uffie rose to indieground fame thanks to filthy ditty “Pop the Glock” and a little help from MySpace and French label Ed Banger. In some ways she’s every “Hip-Hop heads” nightmare; a white chick who Raps, often clumsily, sometimes with an affected British accent, frequently without bothering to rhyme, over beats aimed at hipster-packed dancefloors. Think Lily Allen if she rapped over crunchy Electro squiggles instead of singing over Ska samples. Regardless, her new single is a virtual double-shocker (a triple-threat if you add “The Party” from Justice’s † LP). “First Love” tones down the smut and flips a slow-jam melody into an uptempo love song with Hi-NRG and Eurodisco overtones, that would fit right into the mix behind something like Tiffany Evans‘ neo-Rhythm&Quad track “Promise Ring.” While “Brand New Car” has a more old-school Electro vibe (I’m talking ’80s style, stripped-down synths and claps) with a modern cellphone ringtone edge.

It’s actually the fact that these girls have ridiculous potential to appeal to wider audiences (despite their status as “Rap music outsiders”) that compels me to big them up. Because even if their records aren’t likely to win over fickle backpackers, I could totally see them blowing up in the club/radio arena… If anybody in that arena actually gave indie artists, or anything emerging from a scene outside of their approved “comfort zone” a chance. I’ve gotta pull for ‘em though, because they’re fun, they’re independent, and unlike so much of what has been touted as Hip-Hop for “da club” (largely slower-paced Crunk and Snap tunes) of late, they make uptempo, club-friendly Rap records that you can actually dance to!
