Mixtapes I Don’t Hate: Kenny Raw Tech Supporters Mixtape



Like I said in that profile of Marshall Law not too many moons ago, the whining I did about crappy mixtapes in my feature on A-Trak’s Dirty South Dance mixtape elicited some really sweet (both in the “aww that’s so nice” and the “this mixtape is friggin’ sweet” sense) responses directing me to some worthwhile mixtapery. This post is about one of the guys who hit me up. Part of me wants to assume he probably posted links to this mix on the boards somewhere, but I didn’t see it if he did. And yes, I did do a search just to be certain either way. But much like Rainier Wolfcastle’s goggles when it came to protecting his eyes from deadly acid, the search results “do nothing” in the way of clearing the matter up for me.

The gentleman responsible for the mixy goodness this time out is a Philadelphia resident who goes by the nom de breakbeat of Kenny Raw. He’s down with the Tech Support Crew and the West Wax Collective, both aggregations of disc-jockeys responsible for various party-fun-time club operations around the Philadelphia area. I don’t really know jack doo-doo about that though because I’m not from Philly, but from what I gather their parties have a funky flavor not too dissimilar to the “Wet America” nights where Rance and Dave would throw down that I used to attend every now and then in New York a few years ago.

Clocking in at just under 40 minutes, Kenny’s three-part Tech Supporters Mixtape (download it from his MySpace) is an ambitious set comprised of original re-edits, reconstructions and multi-layered blends of classic Soul and Funk records. The fact that it’s a classics mix, and that Kenny re-edits, chops and loops many of the selections in original ways reminded me a bit of another Philly vinyl-junkie Phil “The Soulman” Stroman of World of Beats. Stroman would also drop the occasional beat crafted from the joints he spun, and would sometimes re-edit, blend and manually loop sections of the songs in imitation of the records that sampled them, or in new ways altogether. But the restructuring and mixing Kenny does on Tech Supporters is way heavier and more intensive. There’s far too much Funk crammed into the short playtime of the mix to even begin to comprehensively list artists, but material from Mandrill, James Brown, Isaac Hayes, Minnie Riperton, and even Fat Joe (the blend of “The Shit Is Real” is actually pretty goddamn slick) stuck out in my mind.

Some of the mixing might be a little “imperfect” compared to the studio mixes our ears have grown used to, but it’s to be expected since this music predates the advent of samplers, drum-machines, midi-clocks and click-tracks, and these bands are swinging. But as a whole Tech Supporters is really well-crafted, and more importantly really fun and funky. I wish I lived closer to Philly so I might get a chance to hang out, and maybe even get my Lavers shuffling a lil’ bit, at one of Kenny and company’s live events.
