So, you say Summer’s officially here, and what you need is some songs to put on the boombox when you’re sitting outside in your lawn-chair? Or on your car-stereo when you’re haulin’ ass down the freeway with your windows down and your arm out the window doing that “hand-airplane” thing? Well, this post is about those songs.
If you have a pretty girl in your band it’s highly likely that I’ll stop and pay attention to whatever you’re doing, even if it’s just to see what the pretty girl is up to. If your band involves keyboards and drum machines, and the pretty girl is pressing buttons on the keyboards and drum machines I’ll probably wind up falling in love with you, the pretty girl, and your band. New York-based duo Misha has keyboards, drum machines, and a pretty girl. Their MySpace page says she does “programming” and “editing.” That means she pushes buttons on the keyboards and drum machines. That’s why I’m writing about them. Did I mention I was in love? Seriously though, the music they make is actually quite pretty. Their new album Teardrop Sweetheart, out now on German indie Tomlab, finds the duo churning out frolicsome ditties, informed by the traditions of soulful ’70s radio Pop, featuring diaphanous vocal melodies set adrift over funky, lo-fi electronic beats. “Losing” glitches things up a little a-la contemporary Lap-Pop, and the way the bass and keys interact makes it feel like your headphones are giving your ears a nice warm hug. Awww… Get the album if you want to hear one of the best songs of the year (hint: it’s called “Delovedly”).

Listening to Modern Love & Death, the new album by Philly’s Hail Social I often feel like I’m listening to the Bee Gees, if they were an Indie band with a slightly whiney Post-Punk/Emo guy as their lead singer instead of one of the pimpin’-ass Gibb brothers. Though they never sound like a Disco-Punk band, there’s a subtly soulful Disco undercurrent to their songs, with lots of electric piano, synthesizers, supple basslines and shuffly beats that you can dance to, topped with saccharine-sweet lead vocals replete with falsetto accents in all the right places. As I understand it, their music hasn’t always been so smooth. And though I wasn’t familiar with their earlier work before copping Modern Love & Death (out now on Polyvinyl), I’ve noted a complaint or two from self-professed fans angry that this album is “soft” and doesn’t “rock” like their debut (which admittedly had a boss cover). Apparently the irony of whining on the internet about an album you don’t like being “soft” is lost on them. But I digress… “Cherry Cola Funk” is one of many groovy tunes on the record that gets me through the night, and makes me want to buy an abandoned roller-rink so I can fix it up and turn the disco ball on when I play it song while DJing there on a Saturday night.
