I’ll cop to being easily annoyed. Over the years I’ve amassed quite the collection of pet peeves. One of them is people who dismissively reject Electronic Dance Music, or worse yet, all electronic music in general, with such sparkling criticisms as “fuck that, it sounds like Techno.” Most often such statements are accompanied by homophobic slurs and angry philosophizing about “manhood” based on the trappings of sub-adolescent gender-politics. And while I’m personally not a fan of “Euro” Techno, commercial “bar” Techno (stop playing it at the strip-club!), and Trance, I’m quite keen on Detroit-style Techno and it’s antecedents, as well as the early House and future-industrial-Electro that inspired the mechanically rhythmic electronic music which became Techno, and many other forms of electronic music. So I just won’t stand for this kind of out-of-hand dismissal of dance music, or electronically-produced music, by closed-minded lunkheads.
Veteran House music DJ-and-producer Armand Van Helden is one guy who definitely knows his dance music. And from the sound of his newest album Ghettoblaster he cares a lot more about making his dance music funky than what some hateful jerkface might call it. The record features guest-appearances by the likes of Fat Joe (whose chopped vocals shockingly grace a straight-up old-school House track), event-promoter-turned-rapper Roxy Cottontail (over a fusion of Hip-House, B-More Club, and Garage on “Playmate”), Kudu (whose “Playing House” gets the jack-your-body remix treatment), and model-turned-rapper Will Lemay (on “This Ain’t Hollywood,” which flexes the late-’80s Club-Rap and Hip-House sound). While stylistically, Van Helden takes listeners on a ride through ’80s and early-’90s club-land, embracing post-Paradise Garage New York Club, Electro, vintage House, Clubhouse/Freestyle, Hip-House, proto-Techno Electro in the vein of Juan Atkins as Model 500, and even a little Disco-Punk. When I recently posted the video for “I Want Your Soul” at Imageyenation OKP BShelly was so enamoured of it he told Emeyesi “this should be one of the songs of the summer.” I totally agree, son.
The cold, mechanical funkiness of the music created by German electronic artists and so-called Krautrock bands, most notably Kraftwerk, was influential on the DJs and musicians who formed the nucleus of the burgeoning Detroit Techno scene back-in-the-day. That influence is still palpable in Techno, IDM, and even the glitchy Boom-Clap style of production favored by some Detroit Hip-Hop producers today. Though it’s not a “Techno” record per-se, Happy Birthday (which doesn’t hit stores until September), from Berlin-based electronic duo Modeselektor brings the electronic-Teutonic-connection full-circle. Like Van Helden, Modeselektor members Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary give listeners a guided tour of international dancefloors. But theirs is a thoroughly modern affair, visiting the dark electronic soundscapes of minimalist Techno, IDM, Dubstep, and Electro, full of sludgy electronic bass, razor sharp synth lines, clicks, and bleeps. Some surprise highlights for me include “The White Flash,” a jumpy Dubstep-influenced track featuring vocals from Radiohead front-man Thom Yorke, and the gutter-fresh Boom-Clap instrumental “The Wedding Toccata Theme,” which sounds like a track Dabrye might make for Invincible and Guilty Simpson.
Thome Yorke? Guilty Simpson? Techno? You be the judge!
