Southernground Reign


The other day when I mentioned voting in the Okayplayer Music Awards I really meant it. I actually started going through the categories and casting ballots as I was writing that article. When I got to “Song Collabo of the Year” my finger wavered over Kanye and T-Pain. Then I saw Madlib and Karriem Riggins further down and was ready to click. That’s when I noticed “International Players Anthem” from U.G.K. featuring Outkast at the very bottom of the list and shouted “Awww, you got me!” before assuredly voting for the tune, which is, in my mind at least, one of the best singles of the year. Little did I know that a few hours later I’d log on to MySpace to be greeted by a bulletin announcing the untimely passing of embattled U.G.K. member Chad “Pimp C” Butler.

Admittedly I’ve been less-than-thrilled with the way Southern Rap has dominated the world of commercial Rap for the last few years. But the recent success of Houston, Texas’ U.G.K. was a marked exception. They were from my era, arriving on the scene at a time when Southern Hip-Hop wasn’t the cash cow it is today (but also wasn’t as ensconced in cultural and stylistic clichés either), ballsily calling themselves Under Ground Kings, a name that just as easily could’ve described other groups of the time like Black Moon or Wu Tang Clan, but which fit Bun B and Pimp C perfectly. I was ready for them to finally get their due after Jay put them on “Big Pimpin’,” but alas, they’d have to wait even longer to add mainstream notoriety to their status as underground royalty. A string of collabos with artists as diverse as Talib Kweli, Dizzee Rascal and Outkast assured me that they were on the right track, reaping the benefits of success while maintaining their artistic integrity. And when “Int’l Players Anthem” blew this Summer I was ecstatic, not just because the song was a certified banger, and it was selling records, but because Pimp and Bun deserved it. So, it’s a shock that Pimp C, after triumphing over his adversities, would pass now, while literally sitting in the lap of luxury.

Despite the loss, the Southern Underground continues to live and thrive. Kentucky-based trio CunninLynguists (who are also up for an OKP award), made up of KY emcees Deacon the Villian and Natti, and Georgia-bred producer/rapper Kno, has been one of the acts spearheading the movement this Millennium, culminating in the release of their new LP Dirty Acres. I’ve watched Kno evolve as a beatmaker since the start of the decade when we both posted beats on the same internet forums, but he’s reached a point where his compositions sound like the work of Organized Noize, if they counted Atmosphere producer Ant as a member. In other words, he’s never lost the indie/underground sensibilities of his days on internet message boards where obscure samples and choppy beats are expected, but he’s bolstered it with an ear for smooth melody, lush instrumentation and a crispy sonic quality. Meanwhile, Deacon and Natti come off as a couple of sensitive microphone bullies; dudes who are hard, but not in a stereotypically buffoonish way, who actually care about shit, not the least of which being their craft as lyricists. It’s authentic Hip-Hop that’s also authentically Southern, and with an array of guests including another king of the Houston underground Devin the Dude, Dungeon Fam’s Witchdoctor, and Little Brother’s Phonte it’s clear that folks hear that authenticity and respect it.
