If You Can’t Beat ‘Em, Just Make Beats

Sure, when looking back on the history of this bouncing blue space-ball (not to be confused with Mel Brooks‘ Spaceballs… but easily confused with Mel Brooks’ History of the World, Part I) called Earth a lot of foul shit can be blamed on Europeans. And while colonialism may have been the biggest export to come from that glorified Asian peninsula for centuries, once the denizens of the New World gave birth to Popular Music and those Europeans got hip to it, it was game-over. Thankfully the region is more likely to produce ill musical acts that incorporate all sorts of influences from various musical genres from around the world than it is to invade some other country and tell it’s citizens to worship Jesus these days. I guess that’s something like the equivalent of modern musical colonialism, but I’ll take funky beats over smallpox any day.

Luckily there is no risk of infectious disease or empirical conquest connected to French Future Soul duo Dinner at the Thompson’s or the music on their debut full-length Lifetime On Planet Earth. With sweet but smoky vocals from New York-raised Lucille T. and beats from Le Havre, France-based producer Fablive, the two commingle dirty Stones Throw-esque Hip-Hop beats, chilled-out Downtempo, coffeeshop Soul, more traditional Soul and Jazz, and even a bit of French Pop to create a sound that’s both grounded & heavy, and light & airy. Most of the record sounds something like UK songbird Corinne Bailey Rae singing over beats by Cali-based beatmaker Oh No filtered through the lens of late-’90s Mancunian Trip-Hop and is likely to appeal to folks who dug previous Blogarhythms featurees like Muhsinah and Little Dragon, as well as the aforementioned Corinne Bailey Rae, Amel Larrieux, Portishead, Erykah Badu and the like.

Truthfully a lot of the production on the LP could just as easily support the heavyweight wordplay of an emcee as it does Lucille T.’s wispy crooning. In fact, the first time I heard the thumping kicks, cracking snares, grungy lo-fi sample snatches, buzzing keyboards and other electronic noises of tracks like “Reality Check,” “Jealousy,” “Another Day,” “Daily Vitamines,” “Can’t Get Over,” and “Consciousness” I stopped and wondered when M.E.D. or Guilty Simpson were gonna start spitting, only to be greeted by the soothing lilt of feminine singing. Other standout tracks manage to go in a totally different direction though, like the totally acoustic ballad “Soaking Blue” (which is just begging to be the soundtrack to your morning coffee and banana loaf purchase at Starbucks) and the dusted breakbeat Jazz of “Dark Haze,” which lays the dark and atmospheric Trip-Hop vibe on pretty heavily.

Just think, had the Brits figured out that whole Trip-Hop thing back in the 1700’s and started sending that stuff to “the colonies” instead of tea, we might all be speaking the Queen’s English here right now. ‘Cause nobody was gonna throw Beth Gibbons or Tricky in any harbor, no matter how much they were getting taxed.
