“Gonna Funk You Right On Up” © Angie Stone and Friends

Since the last couple days have been an enormous bummer for much of the continental United States, especially the eastern seaboard, I think we could all use a pick-me-up. That’s why I’ve decided we’re going to get funky today. I’ve previously featured throwback Funk acts like Clutchy Hopkins, the Dap-Kings, the Budos Band, the Soul Investigators, and even Mark Ronson, all artists whose fans should in all likelihood dig on today’s Blogarhythms selections.

I’m not really sure why I only recently (as in, during the last week) copped Out There, the new full-length from London-born drummer Malcolm Catto’s group Heliocentrics, since it dropped way back in September on the Now Again/Stones Throw label. I think maybe I was under the impression that Now Again was only in the business of Deep Funk reissues or something, and reissues and compilations are often the last things on my list to peep. But I digress… The album is in fact a collection of all new music, other than a handful of tracks that have been previously released as 12” and 7” singles, recorded by the Heliocentrics, a collective of musicians lead by Catto which has previously backed DJ Shadow, and was actually responsible for the throwback Funk heard on “This Time (I’m Gonna Try It My Way),” the standout track from his much-maligned The Outsider LP. Without a doubt Out There sounds like a record that could be a reissue of some lost Funk masterpiece. But it’s also oddly post-modern, with Catto’s drumming often sounding reverse-engineered from a beatdigging perspective, as if it were crafted to have total breakbeat and sampling potential… Something no old-school Funk drummer could have precipitated. It’s not just an excursion into dusty Funk and hard breaks either as the the band is musically adventurous (delving into ’60s film-score theatrics and disjointed Psyche and Jazz numbers) not to mention highly skilled, with bassist Jake Ferguson stealing the show in particular with his resonantly sinuous low-end harmonics.

Since we were both trapped in our respective apartments this weekend by the “Nor’Easter” that shut down transportation in New England, my lady-friend and I whiled away the time on the phone discussing many things, including the heritage of cultural alienation shared by minority groups, specifically African-Americans and Jews, in the United States. Despite the cultural similarities though, there’s not always been a lot of musical cross-pollination going on between the two groups, and I can’t say that my Hebrew brethren have necessarily excelled in any significant way at getting “funky.” So it was sort of a surprise to come across the eponymously-titled debut LP from an Israeli musician named Ophir Kutiel, recording under the name Kutiman, who fuses warm Funk and Soul, sweaty Afro-Beat, fuzzy psychedelia and downtempo Lounge/Exotica into a break-heavy concoction of dancefloor-friendly throwback Funk that only occasionally slips into obviously contemporary “Jam-Band” inauthenticity. With it’s junky percussion, lo-fi drum-breaks, groaning organs, wah-wah guitars, searing horns, slithering lead synth (that sounds like the product of a late-night union of Carlos Santana’s guitar and the Ohio Players‘ Moog), and Trip-Hop-esque female vocal from singer Karolina, the hard-edged Latin-Rock-influenced “Losing It” is one of my favorite joints.
