During my run here on Blogarhythms I’ve made no secret of my love for keyboards and synthesizers. That love also extends to other things, such as drum machines, breakbeats, hi-hat/ride cymbal combos, cowbells, xylophones, lazer sounds and hand-claps. But more than any of those things I love bass. Whether it be a heavy rhythmic bass sound, plucky upright bass, spaced-out synth-bass, choppily programmed sub-bass, or an intricately played melodic bassline, I love it all, as long as it’s got that resonant, extremity rattling hum.
Though they boast two drummers and only a single bass player, Brooklyn, New York-based vaudeville-Punk ensemble Nervous Cabaret takes their bass seriously. With bass duties held down by the group’s band-leader and lead vocalist, actor/dancer/director/producer/musician Elyas Khan, the low end on their newest CD Drop Drop takes a multitude of forms; the thrum and pop of Post-Punk, the fuzzy hum of proto-Metal and Glam-Rock, and even the melodically languid fluidity of Prog-Rock and Jazz fusion. And as the band takes on all of these aesthetic influences, applying them to their own brand of theatrically folksy, urban-Gypsy style Dance-Punk, it’s the pounding drums and reverberating bass that drives it all along.
There’s no track where this is more evident than on “Pere Lachaise,” a manic Glam-vs.-Punk dance jam with a downright punishing bassline. The ominously descending bass notes on the song’s intro, which is reminiscent of the lo-fi fuzz of bands like the White Stripes and Wolfmother, set up a foot-stomping, barroom-brawler of a tune replete with honking, Led Zeppelin-esque Blues-Rock guitar licks, and dual layers of drums & percussion, dipped in the patinated brass sheen of an accompanying horn-section. It’s all topped by a vocal performance from Khan that sounds something like the crazed caterwauling of a carnival barker, burlesque-club announcer or some other old-world sleaze merchant… If they’d switched jobs with the singer from a British Punk band from the late ’70s. But above all else, it’s that bassline that stands out the most.
Nervous Cabaret “Pere Lachaise”
I imagine it’s the sort of thing that would have happened if Toulouse Lautrec had been more like Malcolm McLaren and played manager to a rowdy Gypsy orchestra led by a James Murphy-like character. If they’d had access to a shitload of bass amps of course.
