Records at Random Vol. 37 - Sylvester Step II




A few weeks back my oldest and best friend m. Cody was sitting at my desk perusing the internets when she happened upon a photo of cross-dressing Disco performer Sylvester James at his most fabulous. She professed ignorance of the man, his music, and his pioneering celebration of “alternative” sexuality, but was intrigued, so I promised to play her one of his records at a later date. That date came today, so once again I find myself throwing the whole concept of randomness around which this entire “Records at Random” thing is built out the window in favor of discussing one of my favorite LPs.

I wasn’t born in time to have heard Sylvester’s fusion of Soul, Funk, Disco and proto-Hi-NRG grace the hedonistic dancefloors of the underground dance clubs of the late ’70s and early ’80s. So my love for Sylvester’s music developed in large part from hearing his songs in “Club Classic” DJ sets, on mixtapes, and by simply listening (and dancing) to his records while working around the house. Even so, it wasn’t difficult to recognize his raw talent, marked by an incredible vocal range that slipped easily between a husky baritone and his trademark falsetto, regardless of the setting. And it was utterly impossible to ignore his cultural importance; he was a diva before Whitney, Mary or Beyoncé, he was a gender-bending icon before Boy George, RuPaul or Antony Hegarty, and he presented himself and his sexuality in an unashamedly real way decades before America embraced “gay culture” via “safe” media products like Will & Grace and Queer Eye.

His significance as a media figure and cultural icon aside, Sylvester’s notability, for me at least, stems from his musical output. And I can think of no better a testament to his talents than 1978’s Step II, his fourth studio album, and second as a solo artist. The album leads off with two of his biggest and most memorable hits; the saucily sexy Hi-NRG/Disco ode to dancefloor-born love “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real),” and “Dance (Disco Heat),” a dreamy-but-pumping Disco anthem dedicated to the liberating power of rhythm featuring ample assistance from his background singers Martha Wash and Izora Rhodes. Both of these tunes provide a perfect snapshot of precisely the sort of club-ready compositions he and his collaborators were expert at crafting.

The b-side offers a couple of treats that don’t follow the formula though. “I Took My Strength From You” is a languid, horn-drenched ballad that betrays Sylvester’s Bay Area roots, sounding like a lost Tower of Power track, while also reflective of both Earth Wind & Fire and the trademark Philly Soul sound. But my favorite cut on the album has always been the oft-sampled “Was It Something That I Said,” a more downtempo Funk cut with subtle Northern Soul nuances conspicuous not only for it’s supple bass groove and slithery synths, or it’s openly un-hetero tale of love lost, but for the fact that Sylvester sings it entirely in his striking lower register.

Sadly Sylvester passed away in 1988. But his music lives on, and is still reaching new ears.
