Somebody’s Got a Case of the Mondays!


As big a proponent of the art of songwriting as I am — falling all over myself for artists who flex their vocabulary, pour wit into their wordplay or wear their emotions (lyrically speaking) on their sleeve — I still find myself desiring nothing more than background music to nod my head to every now and again. And while I’m not the type of person known to come down with a metaphorical “case of the Mondays” (in fact, I’m more the sort who would kick your ass for sayin’ somethin’ like that… shout out Diedrich Bader) I figure there’s no better a day to focus on easy-listening head-nod music than Monday.

Unsurprisingly, considering my oft-mentioned love for robots and robot music, Santa Ana, California-based DJ, beatmaker and musician Chris Alfaro, a.k.a. Free the Robots, is the dude I chose to ease us into our week this Monday morning. What might be a bit surprising though is that Alfaro, a one-man band who mixes digital samples snatched from vinyl records with original analog compositions, is in fact not a robot himself, nor does he primarily make what I would call “robot music.” And despite the fact that he originally started Free the Robots as a “joke band,” he’s now proud to call the music he makes Hip-Hop, and would just as readily refer to it as Jazz or Psychedelic music. Me? I call it “easy-listening head-nod Monday morning music,” raw beats, or just plain dope.

Having collaborated or shared stages with avant-garde Hip-Hop acts such as The Gaslamp Killer, Boom-Bip, and Thavius Beck, among others, Alfaro’s work as Free the Robots nestles into a niche not unlike that occupied by those artists and other forward-thinking beatmakers like Madlib, Daedelus, Exile and Flying Lotus while forging it’s own identity distinct from the conventional sounds of Boom-Clap, Glitch-Hop or any other instrumental Hip-Hop what-have-you. Leaning heavily on gritty broken drum-beats, funky Psyche organ loops, weird vocal bits and dusted Jazz vibes as it does, the music on his self-titled EP might elicit comparisons to the likes of DJ Shadow and RJD2 as well, even though it’s not

Two tracks in particular, a slow-paced psyche cut called “Diary” that mashes up samples of The Moody Blues with Geto Boys scratches, and “Yoga Fire,” a slightly more uptempo jam built around pounding drums, wailing organs, vibraphone, saw-tooth synth-bass, and Bollywood vocal-samples would have made fine additions to RJD2’s Deadringer and Since We Last Spoke tracklists. Actually, the latter wouldn’t have sounded that out of place on Madlib’s recent Beat Konducta in India CD either.
