I had the good fortune of making it through the entire Winter season without coming down with a cold or other bug this year. But no sooner had the first day of Spring rolled around when I started feeling a little “off.” First I got achey, then raspy, and then, finally, I woke up one morning with a hacking cough. I’ve had the cough for a solid week now, and I wasn’t too inconvenienced by it until it started interfering with my ability to sleep.
Every day this week I flew into a veritable coughing fit whenever I tried to lay down in my bed and go to sleep. The coughing persists until I throw off my comforter, force myself out of my bed and walk about my apartment. Only an occasional nuisance otherwise, the unstoppable cough assault returns whenever I return to the sack, and no amount of cough-drops or cough-syrup can sooth it. So, I’ve fallen asleep on my decidedly less-comfortable couch instead of my bed more often than not during the last seven or so days.
This infringement of my body’s right to rest comfortably is finally starting to get to me. I miss my bed, and I miss my comfy blanky. But more than anything I miss getting proper sleep! And while Rap-artists, fond as they are of quoting the old adage about sleep being a close relative of death, probably wouldn’t share my pain, there’s a band so appreciative of sleep that they call their minimal lo-fi Electronic-Pop music “Pajama-Pop” and recently released an album which is itself a pean to sleep and the familiar bedtime rituals that often lead to it.
That album, The Bedtime Beat, is the fifth full-length from Lullatone, a husband-and-wife duo, comprised of Japan-born vocalist Yoshimi Tomida and Kentucky-bred composer & musician Shawn James Seymour, based out of Nagoya, Japan. The record’s ten short, soothing electronic lullabys continue in the tradition of the twosome’s output to date, featuring Yoshimi whispering her lyrics (in English and Japanese) like Björk-meets-Satomi Matsuzaki-meets-The Sandman over dreamy music-box tones, toy-keyboard melodies and beats & effects built from chopped-up environmental noises (in this case snores, slapped bathwater and more) after the style of musique concrète.
The playful “The Bathtime Beat,” with it’s backdrop of nominal percussion, plink-plunk toy-xylophone sounds and one-note flute, appropriately enough, features the aforementioned bathwater solo. While “You Snore,” building off a similarly unobtrusive drum-beat, fittingly employs the chopped sounds of snoring and bedtime breathing & wheezing as a percussive bed for its warm-n-cozy keyboard melody. They break from form on the chugging “Goodnight Train,” with a four-on-the-floor kick-drum, deep bass-hum, and swirls of keys that sounds like LCD Soundsystem and Animal Collective joined forces to put all the cranky babies in the world to sleep.
My favorite cut on the disc though is “The Bedtime Beatbox” on which Yoshimi recounts a dream-meeting with Hip-Hop legend Biz Markie (complete with a Biz-inspired rap) over lazily-paced-but-snappy stutter-step drum-programming, the titular vocal percussion, and a simple nursery-ready chime.

Sure, it all just makes me long for the comfort of my bed even more, but at least I’ll have some new melodies to hum myself to sleep with now.
