If the cover of last week’s Records at Random entry from MFSB was subtly sexy then the record lurking behind it in a pile near the television in my living room which earns the spot this week is damn near pornographic. Coming from a group — the untouchable Dayton, Ohio-bred Funk outfit the Ohio Players — who were notorious throughout their career for provocative album artwork as it does its eroticism isn’t necessarily surprising. But even amongst the band’s releases from their Westbound Records period that showcased the hardcore, bondage & discipline-themed photography of Joel Brodsky and featured the stunning bald-headed model Pat Evans 1973’s Ecstasy was boldly suggestive.
Admittedly Ecstasy is my favorite of the Ohio Players albums in my collection, not just for the cover art but for the dirty Funk on the disc sheathed within the salaciously decorated cardboard. None of the songs on Ecstasy are what one would consider signature tunes for the band. The band’s biggest hits are all on their later Mercury Records releases, and their seminal classics are mostly found on their other Westbound albums. But Ecstasy is in general a focused, straightforward record from an incredibly talented group of musicians at the top of their craft, before they exploded commercially, exploring the limits of filthy Funk infused with sweet Soul, psychedelic Rock, breezy Jazz and more (like Classical and dirt-road Country/Blues). There are no whimsically freaky cartoon voices lurking in the periphery as on their earlier releases, and the record is gritty in a way their later discs aren’t, but it’s also pretty, soulful, sentimental and expansively ambitious in it’s musicality.
It opens with the oft-sampled title track, with it’s infectious bass throb, twangy guitar falling somewhere between Outlaw Country and Dennis Coffey, Fillmore-Rock organ, searing brass, and catchy-as-fuck “ah-ha-haah” vocal adlib. And while “Ecstasy” may have provided the basis for a Hip-Hop classic from a certain pair of crime-enamoured emcees the band touches on the sort of playalistic subject matter those same rappers would obsess over thirty years later on the a-side closer “Black Cat,” which boasts an instrumental intro that mixes melancholy psychedelic Soul with baroque Chamber-Pop and a spoken-word bridge akin to Lightnin’ Rod’s Hustler’s Convention LP from the same year. In between those two joints the band drops a hunk of menacing psychedelic Funk called “(I Wanna Know) Do You Feel It” with a guttural bassline, skittering organ and hippie-harmony vocal hooks that make for my second favorite cut on the a-side.
On the b-side I especially dig “Spinnin’,” a song whose content, a matrimonial plea from a lovesick gentleman, is exceptionally conservative, especially in comparison to the aforementioned cover artwork. Even so, it’s the tune’s silky guitars, syrupy-sweet vocal harmonies, desperately passionate main vocal, airily soulful verse parts with Afrobeat-esque horns, and the James Brown-style uptempo Funk on the chorus, that I love so much and which has helped make it a staple of my romantic mix-tape tracklists. Juxtaposed against the sappy “Spinnin’” is “Sleep Talk,” — a hot, dark, slice of humid Funk imbued with sexual paranoia simmering atop layers of organ, electric piano, bass and guitar, punctuated by fuzz guitar, ominous piano chords and bombastic horn blasts which equates desire with a narcotic “trip” — that immediately follows it. While “Silly Billy,” a soft Soul ballad about a heartbroken bar dancer featuring gentle wah-wah guitars, shimmering pianos and a killer falsetto lead, which recalls the Philly sound, is another b-side standout.
Raw instrumentals like “Food Stamps Y’all,” “Not So Sad and Lonely” and “Short Change,” which marry shambling, bottom-heavy grooves, organ parts that bubble between traditional Blues/Soul grooves & hallucinatory Psyche-Rock, big horns and an array of virtuoso performances on guitars and keyboard instruments, round out the rest of the album’s platter-time. And though none of the lyrics on Ecstasy are as sexy as the album cover, the music itself emanates heat and drips with the sweaty scent of sex like only “the Funk” can.
