Four stories of tenement stairs, a couple cumbersome pieces of furniture and gravity all conspired to twist my not-exactly-young-anymore back up a couple of weeks ago. Fists full of OTC pain relievers and some rest on one of said furniture items should’ve been enough to knock me back into fighting shape. But just as I was beginning to feel lovely again I stupidly decided I needed to carry another heavy item up the stairs and that I needed to lift it with my back rather than my legs.
Exacerbated as my back’s already tender state is by the new soreness & muscle tightness — and with nary a therapeutic masseuse in sight — I’m trying to take it easy. And in case you were wondering, that means my music playlist is taking it easy right along with me! It also means that today’s Blogarhythms post just might end up making your Tuesday as “easy” as I had hoped to make your Monday with yesterday’s entry.
The first dose of audio analgesia is an album called Western Water Music Vol. II by Blank Blue, a duo featuring Los Angeles based DJ, producer, and host of the Low End Theory weekly, Nobody (a.k.a. Elvin Estela) on the boards and Niki Randa on vocals. If the name seems familiar it’s because it appeared in this space last year alongside yesterday’s featuree Flying Lotus when both contributed to Art Don’t Sleep’s From LA With Love compilation. Together they make what Estela descibes as “psychedelic bass music,” an amalgam of Psyche-Rock, Folk, Pop, electronic, Jazz and Hip-Hop that all but begs the listener to “turn on” and “tune out” to.
This isn’t scary, cacophonous “bad trip” psychedelia though. Blank Blue’s sound is for the most part a big, warm and friendly one that gives off fuzzy vibes and invites relaxation. It’s as if the cushiony bass tones which underscore the duo’s compositions can make anyone who’ll listen instantly weightless, bouncing them right off the terra firma and leaving them free to spin & tumble along with the mystic instrumentation (assisted by Josh Teague, Ben Knight of The Tyde, Farmer Dave Scher of Beachwood Sparks and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson), atmospheric drones & trippy effects and trail Randa’s beatific vocal melodies heavenward in defiance of the laws of gravity itself. And no, that’s not a mouthful of pills talking either. It’s the music all the way.
Blank Blue “Eyes Closed”
To obtain more earborne opiates we need to go all the way to Minneapolis, Minnesota, home of multi-instrumentalist Martin Luther King Chavez Dosh, otherwise known as Dosh for short. His new album Wolves and Wishes finds the sampler-assisted one-man-band looping up keyboard notes, snatches of drum-beats, an array of improvisational percussion, pitch-bent tones, environmental sounds & noises and performances on a virtual orchestra of other instruments into wobble-jointed avant-garde digi-spliced psychedelic Jazz compositions. The result is both mechanical and organic, and all at once out of this world.
Whatever “out of this world” means to you… Be it a race of robots from another planet who become fascinated with Black Classical Music and recreate it in their own image… The drug-fueled synesthetic hallucinations of an old-time Jazz musician envisioning a future where man and machine become one in an effort to use music as a means of attaining divinity… Or some other “out there” scenario… What it means in the context of Dosh’s Wolves and Wishes is music that’s good for “zoning out” to. In other words, it’s music that is, simply put, an escape from the realities of here and now, whatever they may be for you.

If escaping your reality isn’t your bag though, Detroit emcees Invincible (whose debut LP Shapeshifters can be purchased online now but hits stores June 17th) and Finale just dropped a dose of harsh realism in the form of their docu-music-video “Locusts.” It intercuts music video-style clips of the two spitting raps about how so-called urban renewal hasn’t renewed much of anything in their hometown with documentary footage of interviews with experts on the subject and folks who’ve experienced socio-economic destruction in their own neighborhoods. They’re trying to get it broadcast on CurrentTV, which happens to be one of my favorite new-school cable networks. All they need is a vote or two from people like you to make it happen.
The scenes they depict in the video are familiar to me from my own city where urban development never seems to develop into much more than abandoned buildings, desolate ruins and schemes designed to obscure all the poor people and brown folks who make up our citizenry. Luckily for me, there are still some well-maintained old buildings in the city though. If there weren’t I wouldn’t have anywhere to strain my back carrying shit up stairs or a place to rest afterwards.
