I live in an apartment that doubles as an office, a recording studio, a storage space for all manner of media, an art studio and a textiles workshop. As you might imagine this doesn’t make it the most opportune location to entertain visitors. For this reason m. Cody and I only rarely invite people over to hang out. And while the Summer Solstice isn’t necessarily a cause for celebration in our household, Solstice Saturday turned out to be one of those rare occasions when we have company over.
This in turn wound up being one of those occasions when my iTunes software and it’s “shuffle” button (in concert with a robust hard-drive and far-too-many digital music files) came in handy. In between discussion of the ancient cultures of Kemet & Mesoamerica, and shared confusion over the proper pronunciation of “Lykke Li,” talk turned to the jumble of randomly-selected songs playing in the background. In the process our guest was introduced to a few things she’d never heard before and I got reacquainted with a couple of things I forgot I knew about.
Mutual edification of this sort is a wonderful thing, but by Sunday afternoon I was kicking myself for not putting Feed the Animals, the new album from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-based DJ, mashup artist and sample-based musician Greg Gillis, a.k.a. Girl Talk, on and calling it a day. After all, Gillis’ stream-of-consciousness mixing style, based around the splicing of slices of Pop, Hip-Hop, R&B and Dance hits together with Indie-Rock, Metal, ’90s Alt-Rock & Grunge, Oldies, ’80s tunes and Club Classics into dancefloor-friendly sound collages, can be just as schizophrenic a listening experience as my hard-drive on “shuffle.”
None of the legal questions surrounding his wildly successful 2006 outing Night Ripper seem to have affected Gillis’ creative approach when putting Feed the Animals together. He’s still cutting and pasting bits of songs you could go the rest of your life without hearing again, songs you wish you’d never heard in the first place, songs you don’t hear nearly often enough and songs that you’d want to take with you if you were ever stranded on a desert island into new songs you’ll want to listen to over and over again.
Of course there are tons of unexpected match-ups to listen for… Blackstreet, Kanye West & Radiohead on “Still Here.” Jay-Z, Radiohead (again), Mary J. Blige & the Guess Who on “Set It Off.” Public Enemy & Heart on “No Pause.” Afrika Bambaataa, the Cardigans, Hot Chip, Flo Rida & the Velvet Underground on “Hands In the Air.” Deee-Lite, Nirvana & Salt-N-Pepa on “In Step.” The Quad City DJ’s & Chicago on “Here’s the Thing.” Lil’ Wayne & the Red Hot Chili Peppers on “Play Your Part Pt. 2.” And m. Cody’s favorite, The Jets, M.I.A. & the Cranberries on “Let Me See You.”
Although Gillis might be up to his old tricks musically he and his friends at the Illegal Art label have more than the surprise of hearing R. Kelly, Bizarre Inc., Daft Punk, Fleetwood Mac, Tone Loc & Trina mashed up on “Let Me See You.” Taking a cue from Radiohead’s In Rainbows scheme, they’re offering Feed the Animals for download via their website on “name your own price” basis. You can pay what you want, including nothing, but if you meet certain price quotas you’ll be rewarded with higher quality files and a terrestrial copy when the CD drops in September.
Whatever you plan on paying, you need to go get a copy, because it’s one of the most essential listens of the newly-started Summer season. I’d go so far as to say it’s the perfect universal party-starter or background soundtrack for any occasion since an all-inclusive mix of Oldies, Old-School Rap, Rock & Pop classics from the ’80s and ’90s and contemporary Rap, R&B and Alternative/Indie joints guarantees everybody — from your parents (or grandparents even), to your knucklehead younger sibling, to your jaded hipster cousin, to your radio-and-MTV/BET-addicted significant other — will hear something they like.
The amount of poop-mouth throughout is the only thing forcing me to rethink that position, since your Mom probably won’t be too psyched about Lil’ Jon & the Youngbloodz shouting expletives all over “A Whiter Shade of Pale.”

Yup. This shit bangs.
I gave serious thought to playing it in it’s entirety at Mr. Cereffusion’s wedding.
