I’m sure the merger of aggressively-paced, barb-riffed Post-Punk with the gently undulating sinews and mechanical pulses of Electronica by British rockers Bloc Party on their new record, as discussed in yesterday’s post, is libel to catch some of their fans off guard. But fans of today’s featured artist — a Canadian composer of soulful Electro-Acoustic Glitch-Pop named Milosh — probably shouldn’t worry about being shocked by his new full-length in a similar way.
I, for one, count myself a fan of the Toronto-based multi-instrumentalist. Astute readers may remember his singular moniker from the handful of occasions — most notably a recommendation of his standout track “Then It Happened” from Ghostly International and Adult Swim’s Ghostly Swim compilation this Spring — I’ve thrown it into the mix in this space. But I’ve been been anticipating a new LP from the classically-trained, hush-voiced, IDM craftsman since his last full-length Meme became one of my favorite records of 2006.
Being that Milosh is sort of a low-profile guy (he actually spent a year living in isolation on the island of Koh Samui in Thailand), and news about him can be scarce, I wasn’t even aware that he was working on a new album, much less that its release was imminent, until I actually had a copy of it in my hands. In fact, after “Then It Happened” showed up I sort of assumed he was newly signed (or in the process of signing) to Ghostly Int. and would be releasing more music via that label at a wholly indeterminate date in the future. That turned out not to be the case though, and his third album, simply titled III, arrives via !K7 overseas and his longtime label Plug Research (just not until September 8th) here in the states.
The product of his lonely year in Thailand, III reflects Milosh’s emotional and cultural disconnect during the time he spent writing and recording it with sensitive, soul-baring lyricism delivered in his signature breeze-soft falsetto over soundscapes infused with a sense of the paradisaical liquidity of island life. That his songs connect and resonate so well is unsurprising for an artist who’s long applied a humanistic approach to the electronic milieu by injecting his digital compositions with bare-faced emotion, beautiful Pop songwriting and vivid analog instrumentation that belie the flesh-and-blood heart that pulses amidst the circuit boards and transistors.
Coincidentally enough, the impetus behind III seems to be the exact opposite of that described by Bloc Party frontman Kele Okereke’s as underlying their Intimacy. Milosh describes III as “a personal record” which he hopes listeners will profoundly connect with during intense private listening sessions while alone in their car or on their iPod rather than a “party” record intended to fuel a communal dancefloor experience. I was struck by the personal, private tone of the record from the first listen when I detected a sensual romantic quality akin to Quiet Storm R&B on the disc’s slower, more dramatically paced selections.
Well, it’s like Quiet Storm R&B if Kraftwerk, Aphex Twin, Squarepusher and Dntel were part of the Rhythm & Blues canon I suppose. A good point of reference might be a blue-eyed Soul crooner like Bobby Caldwell, if he were signed to Warp Records. Even amongst the skittering computer-generated rhythms, , futuristic sci-fi synths, clicks, ticks, pops, digitally decayed samples and programmed beats heard on songs like “Another Day,” “Remember the Good Things,” “Awful Game” and “Wrapped Round My Ways” there’s a soulful air. And it doesn’t even spring from Milosh’s golden falsetto, but the twinkling keyboard lines, warm bass swells and scraping beats which recall the sweet-n-sexy slow jams of ’70s Soul, Funk & R&B and the electric baby makin’ music of more contemporary acts.

III is for anybody who ever thought it’d be a good idea for Thom Yorke to make an album of orchestral laptop tunes that blended the urgently emotional soul-drenched glitch of “The Eraser,” the slinky Soul/Jazz-infused sensuality of “Nude,” and the funky from-the-gut passion of “All I Need.” Or it could just be for anybody who was waiting to see how Milosh would follow up the outstanding Meme. Either way, it’s for me.
