Count Me In for the Night

Metronomy

If the “great outdoors” is my “cathedral” than I suppose the discotheque is my altar. Seriously, I’ve had numerous “religious experiences” during my lifetime and nightclubs are the most frequent locations in which they’ve occured.

Before you ask, no I wasn’t drunk or on drugs, so these bursts of seemingly supernatural energy weren’t the byproduct of too much “partying.” I think it more likely that flashing lights, being immersed in sound, and the primeval ritual aspect of communal dance simply sparks something in the human mind (or “soul”). It reawakens a suppressed part of us that’s capable of feeling the shamanic sensation of divine congress which inspired our ancient ancestors to beat out rhythms and dance in the first place.

Metronomy ‘Nights Out’Sadly, I haven’t been to “the club” in far too long. Somehow I always seem to miss hearing my homie DJ12XU spin at local spots like The Basement, finding out about his gigs after the fact. And it’s been so long since I’ve visited a serious dance night that one of my favorite spots in “the city” — Club Shelter NYC — actually set up shop in a totally new location in the interim. So I can’t say as I can totally relate to the idea behind Nights Out — the brand new LP from Blogarhythms alums Metronomy — which has been described by frontman Joseph Mount as “a half-arsed concept album about going out and having a crap time” since my nights are frequently spent at home, and are only rarely “crap.”

That’s not to say the London-based trio’s sophomore album (their first as a trio, with Oscar Cash and Gabriel Stebbing joining Mount, though the album itself was still recorded almost wholly by him alone) isn’t enjoyable. To the contrary, its bouncy Hot Chip-esque Synth-Rock/Indie-Dance jams like “Radio Ladio” (which I’ve previously touted in this space), “A Thing for Me” (which has a “Bloc Party if they were on DFA” sort of vibe) and “On Dancefloors,” the avant-Disco groover “Holiday” with it’s ricocheting guitar tones and stretchy-latex bassline (which wouldn’t sound out of place mixed with something off that Hercules & Love Affair record), and “The End of You Too,” a spastic New Wave/Disco/House/Electro instrumental with nervous Grime/Dubstep-influenced breakdowns, are quite literally music to my ears. As are joints like previous single “Heart Rate Rapid” and “On the Motorway”/”Back On the Motorway” which find the group indulging in Devo-inspired Post-Punk synth nerdery.

The Smiths’ frontman MorrisseyLike an actual “night out” the disc holds its moments of serendipity, uncomfortablness and surreal weirdness, a few of which can be heard on recent single “Heartbreaker” (which might be my favorite tune on the record) and the album’s mid-point-marking “Side 2.” The former, a shrewd, sensitive, slightly depressed tune about some bloke chatting up his mate about how the chap’s former girlfriend has done them both wrong (the slag!), splices Minneapolis-style Electro-Funk with synthy British New Romanticisms and sounds something like The Smiths covering “Erotic City.” While the latter, a smoked-out stoner instrumental, is a decidedly detuned, downtempo affair where abstract bass warbles and gangly guitar notes stray over a crookedly limping drumbeat until the main groove — comprised of fuzzy Psyche guitars, flute-like tones from what sounds like a Mellotron and more persistently head-noddable programming — kicks in.

With records like this keeping me so captivated when I’m close to home I guess I shouldn’t miss Nights Out so much. Sitting alone with headphones on might be a far cry from some of the tribal religious revivals I’ve experienced on those occasions when my nightlife experience was perfect. But I’ve had far more experiences at dive bars and local dance nights where the music was shit and the scenester crowd pissed me off.

So I guess there’s some comfort in knowing that the “DJ” is always going to play something I like and the clientele is always going to be friendly if I spend the “night in.”
