Rose Royce ‘Rose Royce III: Strikes Again!’

I said a lot of good things about nature this week. So I was saddened when I learned it had run its course with legendary Soul music composer and producer Norman Whitfield, who passed away on Tuesday due to complications stemming from diabetes. He was only 65 years old.

Norman WhitfieldLike many songwriters and studio wizards responsible for crafting popular music Whitfield wasn’t a celebrity of the same status as most of the artists he worked with. But he was the creative force behind a body of work that includes countless smash commercial hits and trend-setting classics for an array of Soul icons over the years. He was one of the apprentice workmen brave enough to step away from Berry Gordy’s assembly-line blueprint for poppy sophisticated Soul, leading the Motown label into it’s second phase by embracing fuzzy Funk, psychedelic Rock and revolutionary political and social content. He was also in the delivery room when Soul music gave birth to what would eventually be called Disco.

It’s worth noting that I don’t usually run obituaries in this space because I prefer to concentrate on the positivity of artistic creation by celebrating the gifts artists gave us in their life rather than mourning their deaths. Their music will always live on, and through it so will they. However, it just so happens that Rose Royce’s 1978 LP Rose Royce III: Stikes Again!, which was produced by Whitfield and released on the record label which bore his name, was at the top of the pile of records leaning against the leg of my desk from which I cull Records at Random records. It’s been in that pile for months. I’ve flipped past it over and over and even listened to it on occasion. But it’s presence on top of the pile during the week of Whitfield’s passing meant another Records at Random just could not pass without aknowledging it.

Rose RoyceHaving been released during the late ’70s I wasn’t expecting the Los Angeles-based 9-piece soul-stirring Disco-Funk mini-orchestra’s Strikes Again! to be a gritty psychedelic Funk/Soul masterpiece. And I was well aware that it wasn’t one of Whitfield’s groundbreaking career-defining works of bar-raising genius. But it was by no means a disappointing addition to my collection. No record that boasts the original recording of the oft-covered Quiet-Storm classic “Love Don’t Live Here Anymore” could possibly be a disappointment! The disc’s cache extends far beyond the inclusion of that synthesizer-assisted orchestral slow-jam chestnut though.

The album-opener “Get Up Off Your Fat,” a multi-voiced Funk number in the tradition of the Ohio Players, with fuzzy Psyche-ish guitars, tricky bass melodies and subtle Classsical influences, for example has a surprising amount of “stank” on it. While “Do It, Do It” — a slap-happy bass-jam which peppers a Kool & The Gang-esque grooves with Miami-Funk-flavor and slick synths — and “First Come, First Serve” — with its percussive rattle & sputter, curdled synth gurgles and clap-stomp beat — twist traditional Funk and Disco towards the Post-Disco, Electrofunk and dancefloor R&B that would dominate the early ’80s. Not to mention the electronic dance music of the next few decades in the case of the latter.

The b-side goes heavy on the slow-jams. Side-starter “Angel In the Sky” is sweet for its youthful nievete and dewy sentimentality (both bolstered by an especially girlish vocal from Gwen Dickey which stands in stark contrast to her turn on the very grownup “Love Don’t Live Here…”) and its ornate arrangement of strings and piano. And “Let Me Be the First to Know,” which is equally as succulent musically, stirs feather-soft guitar strums together with strings and multi-part vocal harmonies into an exotic, vaguely Latin-flavored ballad. But my favorite selection on the b-side, “That’s What’s Wrong With Me,” not only sets the slow tempos and quiet melodies aside, it’s actually as close as one could have gotten to one of those aforementioned “gritty psychedelic Soul/Funk” songs on a slick later-’70s R&B record. It’s an electronic Blues-Rock boogie with Afro-Latin polyrhtymic percussion, dirty, fuzz-box-afflicted guitar wails, proggy synthesizer bleats, a pompous brass section and multiple rhythmic changes throughout its six-and-a-half-minute playtime. And if that sounds weird in print it’s because it actually does sound weird.

Admittedly weird was not what I’d anticipated from Norman Whitfield, Rose Royce, Strikes Again! or R&B on the cusp of the ’80s. But hearing a song that combines so many disparate genres on a slice of old-school wax like this only reinforces my desire to hear trendy modern-day R&B acts stray from formula and mix it up with elements of Rock’n'Roll, Electronica, Dance Music, psychedelia and more.

Ever the trend-setter that Norman Whitfield, even when I thought he’d be playing it safe.
