Blow the Whistle on Big Tobacco

Pennsylvaniac quintet Black Moth Super Rainbow’s name has appeared in this space more times than I care to count. No, really… I just went to count exactly how many times I’ve mentioned them on this blog and decided to stop when I got to five. Regardless, their blissfully stoned elementary school film-strip music — part primitive Electronica, part dusted Prog-Rock, part futuristic Freak-Folk — is stupefying, and I’ll take every opportunity I can to urge others to get stupid to it too.

Tobacco ‘Fucked Up Friends’Earlier this year the group dropped a new two-song single “Zodiac Girls” which was available on 7” vinyl and as a digital download, and the Drippers EP which featured rarities, outtakes and remixes. Apparently Tobacco, the BMSR member who talks through the vocoder, also released a limited-edition DVD of his solo audio/visual project Fucked Up Friends some time last year. I somehow missed out on that entirely. But lucky for me, and anybody else in search of more Super Rainbow pots of gold, the Anticon collective has picked up Fucked Up Friends and is releasing the audio version on CD and limited vinyl this week.

Part of me feels bad for assuming that Tobacco and his BMSR comrades do a lot of drugs. But c’mon, they’re a bunch of cats & kittens who retreat into the woods with vintage analog synthesizers and shitty tape machines to record lo-fi breakbeat-driven electronic music which sounds like the Rockford Files theme-song mashed up with the old-school PBS bumper music over pause-mixed bits of Ultimate Breaks & Beats and boasts song titles that reference witches, flowers, insects, candy, wizards, colors, bubblegum and all manner of psychedelic miscellany. Then there’s their name and the dayglo nightmares that are their album covers to contend with. How could they not be tripping balls? It’s either that, or they were all hypnotized by Mothman while cavorting in those dark western Pennsylvania hills.

With an album title like Fucked Up Friends (I refuse to believe he means his friends are assholes) and a cover that makes me think of weirdo cult-flick Gummo for some reason I can’t say Tobacco’s solo outing does much to dissuade me of my notion that he and his bandmates are narcotically inclined. Going it alone in the wilds of rural Pennsylvania, Tobacco sticks close to the path already forged through the strange and mysterious woods by his band, crafting spaced-out, distortion and tape-hiss-drenched Psychetronica tunes using flower-powered analog synths and dusty drum-breaks. If anything sets his solo LP apart from the output of BMSR as a whole it’s that his music seems even more beat-centric, with an emphasis on super-staticy drum kits and slimy synth-bass grooves that creep along like cybernetic caterpillars.

Aesop Rock and El-PTobacco’s booming drum-tracks and gelatinous, lava-lamp melodies sound how I’d imagine El-P would if he was more enamoured with psychedelia, Timothy Leary, fantasy, the paranormal and rural landscapes than b-boy bravado, Philip K. Dick, dystopian prophesying and the concrete, steel & neon skylines of New York in its past, present and hypothetical future incarnations. “Horse Head” for example sounds like something from Fantastic Damage if the MGMT got ahold of it. The Def Jux association is only bolstered by the appearance of Aesop Rock on “Dirt,” where the veteran Jukie’s colorful pop-culture abstraction and botany & wildlife-themed punchlines grapple with looped vinyl noise, Tobacco’s trippy vocoder chants and synths that growl & scream for control of the track’s thunderous stutter-stepping drum-beat.

Other highlights include “Hairy Candy,” a black hole of warping synths, melancholy Melotron and programming that’s a few thumps, claps and a BPM injection away from Baltimore Club, “Gross Magik,” which sounds like Bruce Haack produced by Da Beatminerz under the aegis of Sir George Martin at Abbey Road, the robot whale-song “Pink Goo,” and the Beastie Boysesque fuzz of “Berries That Burn.” And tunes like the too-short Chamber-Folk Dub experiment “Yum Yum Cult,” where acoustic guitar (downy guitar-strums are also heard on “Tape Eater”) is the lead instrument, and album closer “Grease Wizard,” which ups the tempo markedly making the track something of a club banger with subtle hints of Electro-Funk, Italo-Disco, 16-bit console era video game music and the synthesizer-fueled scores of schlocky ’80s sci-fi/fantasy flicks stand out simply for standing out.

To use outdated stoner parlance, I can dig it. And I can say that even as a guy who doesn’t indulge in illicit substances himself. As such I can also “dig” the ballot initiative (Question 2) that will be up for vote on November 4th here in my home-state of Massachusetts that would decriminalize the possession of small amounts of marijuana. I might not use the stuff, but I know plenty of other people do, and personally I’d like it if they stayed out of jail so I can continue to recommend them music which they might like getting smoked-out to.

Vote Yes on Question 2 on November 4th!So even though I don’t smoke, on election day I will be voting yes on Question 2 when I go into the voting booth to cast my ballot for Barack Obama in the presidential election. And I hope anybody in the reading audience who’s eligible to vote in the state of Massachusetts will be doing the same. In the meantime, go get yourself a copy of Tobacco’s new album, get together with some friends, and get “fucked up.”

Whatever you do though, and however far off your gourde you get, don’t forget to vote come November.
