Records Reissues at Random, Vol. 71: Sixto Rodriguez Cold Fact

Sixto Rodriguez

Early in the week I praised Tabacco and his group Black Moth Super Rainbow for the druggy, psychedelic quality of their music. This might seem odd coming from a person like myself who’s proud of the fact that they abstain from ingesting things like actual tobacco, in both it’s traditional and “wacky” varieties, and other intoxicating or mind-altering substances.

Bob DylanIf I’m being perfectly honest though, I’ve always dug on music attached to the drug culture and more specifically I’ve loved a lot of songs over the years that are outright dedications to narcotics. Contemporary hipsters singing about clubbing and doing coke are awesome to me, even if people at clubs actually doing coke aren’t. As a teenager the blunted gangsta fairy-tales of Cypress Hill and the celebratory weed anthems of Redman were my shit, even if I never sparked an “L” myself. Old school joints like Peter Tosh’s herbal freedom anthem “Legalize It” and cautionary tales likes Eric Clapton’s pilfered hit “Cocaine” and Neil Young’s “The Needle and the Damage Done” were always fascinating to me. Then there were far less conspicuous compositions like Cole Porter’s oft-covered Jazz standard “I Get a Kick Out of You” and perennial folkie Bob Dylan’s “Rainy Day Women #12 & 35,” which were sing-a-long favorites of my mom’s since I was a baby.

Though I didn’t discover it until relatively late in it’s existence, one of my all-time favorite drug anthems is a song called “Sugarman” by a little-known psychedelic Folk singer named Sixto Rodriguez. The first time I heard the song it wasn’t even the original version. It was a cover by The Free Association, a project from Irish club promoter, DJ, producer, musician and composer David Holmes which I stumbled upon in my fervor for Downtempo imports a number of years ago. At any rate, the 12” included a Downtempo Rock version and two remixes, one courtesy of Feist collaborators VV and Gonzales, and another by club music shaman Maurice Fulton. For some reason though I began equating The Free Association with The Free Design, and for a while I was confused as to why the wholesome sibling Folk act would have made a decidedly seedy song like “Sugarman.” It just didn’t make any sense to me, and I was even more baffled when reissue-happy label A Light In the Attic began re-releasing The Free Design’s discography (they even put out an album full of remixes by “of the minute” producers) but “Sugarman” wasn’t on any of them. All my confusion ended when me and my homie Emeyesi stumbled on the real original version of “Sugarman” by Sixto Rodriguez.

Rodriguez ‘Cold Fact’It’s a few years on from that point now, and no lesser an institution than A Light In the Attic have re-issued Sixto’s debut album Cold Facts, which was originally released by Sussex in 1970, complete with the song that started it all, “Sugarman.” The song itself is quite literally a trip, as Sixto mythologizes drug pushers in a way Hip-Hop artists are seemingly incapable of, painting the titular “sugarman” as a Willy Wonka-like figure capable of bending reality with his “jumpers, coke” and “sweet Mary Jane,” over eerily wheezing strings and synths. Listening to the rest of Cold Fact, a collection of Dylan-esque Folk tunes re-tooled specifically for the hard but soulful streets of Detroit and recorded with the assistance of legendary Motor City musicians like guitarist Dennis Coffey and bassist Bob Babbitt, it’s pretty clear that Rodriguez and his neighbors had a lot of heavy shit they needed an escape from, so he can surely be forgiven his narcotic fantasies of “silver magic ships” that “make (his) questions disappear.”

 Sixto Rodriguez “Sugarman” (MP3)

Rodriguez was a bitter critic of “the establishment” and the people who surrounded him alike, and an astute documentarian of the harrowing existence faced by denizens of urban America. As such his observations of the political, the economic, the social, the psychological and even the romantic make him kin not only to a post-modern American chronicler and populist troubador like Bob Dylan but counter-cultural firebrand poets of the inner-city like Gil Scott-Heron, Terry Callier and Eugene McDaniels as well. He’s at his most ardent on songs like the analytical David Axelrod-reminiscent “Crucify Your Mind,” “This Is Not a Song, It’s an Outburst,” a stream-of-conscious litany of society’s failings, the Animals-esque “Hate Street Dialogue,” the bittersweet “Jane S. Piddy,” and the image-smashing “Like Janis” which all recall Dylan gems like “Only a Pawn In Their Game,” “Like a Rolling Stone,” “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall” and “Subterranean Homesick Blues” rolled up in loose Folk-Funk, smoked, and exhaled in a mellow but burning psychedelic haze.

Parliament ‘Osmium’Cold Fact is a vehicle for Sixto’s acerbic songwriting, but it certainly benefits from the production & arranging talents and musicianship of his collaborators like the aforementioned Coffey & Babbitt and Mike Theodore. The way they support Rodriguez with wicked guitar licks, anacondan basslines and orchestral arrangements help keep the album from becoming some bare-boned exercise in “angry guy with a guitar” Folk. And on at least one tune, the Jimi Hendrix-ish “Only Good for Conversation,” which pits Sixto’s sneering, near mysogynistic lyricism against a rock-hard drum-break, fuzzed-out Rock guitars and a wildly undulating bassline, the backing band really gets to step out from behind the star and work. What results is the album’s most anomalous composition, and a cut as raw as anything Sixto’s Detroit contemporaries like Parliament/Funkadelic were laying down at the time on albums like Osmium and Funkadelic, not to mention Dennis Coffey’s work with his Detroit Guitar Band.

While I may not be a stoner, I must have the mind of one to ever mistake Sixto’s “Sugarman” for a Free Design tune. But I’m glad I learned the “cold fact” of the matter and re-discovered the long-hidden talent of Sixto Rodriguez. A guy who retired after releasing just two albums and yet still managed to become a cult-figure in Africa and Australia deserves a renaissance as far as I’m concerned. So I’m even happier that A Light In the Attic keeps bringing artists like The Free Design, Sixto Rodriguez and others to a totally new audience by making their music available again.
