Randomer than a Friday Records at Random post, it’s another special “El Keter’s got way too much music and only so many days in the year to write about it all” Shuffle Songs post!

The Knux ‘Remind Me In 3 Days’First up…New Orleans-via-Hollywood duo The Knux dropped their debut Remind Me In 3 Days this week. I wasn’t sure what to expect–them being an unproven Hip-Hop act on a major label in 2008 and all–but it’s a refreshingly “real” Rap record with roots nourished by the last three decades of Hip-Hop tradition despite it’s musical and commercial ambitions. It’s not a “hipster-hop” record, even though the group admits to riding skateboards, embraces Pop, Punk, New Wave, Rock & Electronic music, and favor a “throwback” aesthetic. But all of those disparate influences and live instrumentation (their guitar-heavy sound reminds me of Bay Area crew High Decibels) mingle with traditional boom-bap beats (see “Fire,” “Shine Again,” “The True” and “Parking Lot”), retro fastrapisms (see “The List” and “Life In a Cage”), scratches, Top 40 “hip-pop” swagger and straight-up emceeing that recalls the likes of Del and Fatlip of The Pharcyde. As such it’s sort-of a more carefree take on the kind of calculatedly amalgamate album indiegrounders like Blackalicious and Lyrics Born have made their business of late.

Skream “Midnight Request Line (Remixes)” 12”One of yesterday’s featurees (kinda) makes (yet another) return appearance via a reworking of one of the signature anthems of the Dubstep genre. The songwriting, producing, recording and remixing juggernaut that is Hot Chip (actually it’s just Joe Goddard) were tapped to remix fellow Londoner Skream’s massive tune “Midnight Request Line!” The 21-year-old producer’s breakout hit is not new by any stretch of the imagination, but his label Tempa Records has only just released a 12” remix EP with two brand new rubs, one from the aforementioned Hot Chip sound, the other from in-demand UK-based House music producer Switch who has a slew of high-profile production work with the likes of M.I.A., Tricky and Santogold under his belt. Both mixes bang in their own way…Hot Chip’s as a grungy, electro-sludge-dripping downtempo shambler that’s just as dark and icey as the original while lending it a Star Wars original-trilogy feel with triumphant synth-strings & ping-ponging laser sounds…The only thing that could have possibly improved it more is if Joe and his homeboy Dels were trading raps over it…And Switch’s as a thudding dancefloor chugger with worm-hole-warped space-bass and fidgety edits of the tune’s original vocal intro sprinkled throughout.

Iller Than Theirs ‘Wash, Rinse, Repeat’ EPMore Rap “realness” hit the internets this week thanks to Iller Than Theirs, a duo consisting of emcees Tone Tank and Kray, one of numerous acts spun-off from the Brooklyn-based Nuclear Family collective. The crew has spent most of 2008 offering their increasingly dope music up for free download on the web, and their newest project, the four-song Wash, Rinse EP continues that tradition. It takes the final track from Iller Than Theirs’ self-titled debut full-length, “Wash, Rinse, Repeat,” and turns into four, totally new, totally different songs with beats and vocal contributions from fellow Nuk Fammers Baje One & Snafu of Junk Science, J. Howells Werthman, Scott Thorough and Probe, as well as their friends Doc Strange and Cool Calm Pete. Collectively these dudes are the definition of the modern urban everyman. They communicate in a uniquely authentic voice and speak to the realities of my existence as a music-loving newly thirtysomething city-dweller struggling to survive and maintain peace of mind. And they eschew the consumerist daydreams and criminal fantasies which betray many a Hip-Hop artist’s phoniness and contribute to the mental and spiritual sickness of our neighbors. Which wouldn’t matter if their music wasn’t dope…which it is. I’ve been telling you Blogarhythms readers as much for over a year now. And wouldja believe, Tone even quotes the first ever “review” I wrote of his group here on Blogarhythms on this very EP? Now that’s ill!

Yo! Majesty ‘Futuristically Speaking…Never Be Afraid’All-female Tampa, Florida-based Crunk/Punk/Gospel/Electro duo Yo! Majesty are injecting their own brand of “realness,” and a brand not often heard at that, into the Hip-Hop genre with their just-released debut album Futuristically Speaking…Never Be Afraid. Seriously, they’re a couple of very outspoken, foul-moutheded girls who like girls–and not in that “My Girl Gotta Girlfriend” or “I Kissed a Girl” kind of way–and they’ve been known to perform topless (the homie Emeyesi witnessed this at a gig in Boston) because they’re comfortable with their bodies, they think you should be comfortable with their bodies (and your own) and hey…if all those muscled-up thug-rap dudes can walk around all bare-chested and oily why can’t they? They’re very frank when it comes to expressions of sexuality, picking up and then waving the torch for the sort of dirty-as-fuck, bass-heavy Party-Rap that put their phallus-shaped home state on the Hip-Hop map back in the day. But they’re not just a couple of crass chicks screaming for broads to “drop it to the floor” or make their “booty clap.” They’re socially & spiritually conscious too, injecting words of introspection and upliftment between their ribald chants and maintaining (much like the pioneers of so-called Gangsta Rap who claimed their irresponsible subject matter was a tool for social change) that even their filthy side serves a higher, culturally redeeming purpose.

I know, I’ve thrown a few more joints into the shuffle when I’ve done these types of posts in the past, but in light of my wordiness this time out I think I’ve said enough.
