This Jookabox Has More Hits Than the Fonz’s

As much of a bummer as it is to admit, my All Hallows’ Eve was spent neither handing out nor stuffing my face with candy treats. No, the inner-city in the year 2008 just isn’t the most trick-or-treating-friendly locale. Instead, my Friday night activities included a lengthy conversation with my lady-friend about how she’s being “pressured to pro-create” by her family.

This pressure mostly consists of her god-mother telling her that she and I would make “pretty babies.” That sounds pretty innocent on the surface, but to my partner, who’s never enjoyed a relationship that met with such familial approval and so never heard such offspring-related wishery, it’s torturous. “I know we’d make pretty babies” she shouts, “but who’s gonna pay for ‘em?”

Grampall Jookabox ‘Ropechain’Certainly not me. I need money for candy godammit! Candy and clothes! Seriously, my usual response to the occasional inquiry as to if or when I plan on reproducing is something along the lines of “daddy needs a new pair of SB’s, he doesn’t have money for babies.” A sentiment which is echoed almost word for word in a song by Indianapolis, Indiana musician David “Moose” Adamson, a.k.a. Grampall Jookabox, called “The Girl Ain’t Preggers” from his sophomore album Ropechain which hits stores this week on the Asthmatic Kitty label.

At first glance it could seem overly-cynical, crass or jokey. But it’s actually pretty straightforward, almost uncomfortably honest, astute in its analysis of socioeconomic realities, bittersweet, and even poignant. Over shuddering drum-machines, an elastic Post-Punk bass riff, and church-choir tambourine & soul-claps Adamson shouts “I need some clothes right now…I can’t clothe no baby,” whines about how good it feels knowing he’s not gonna be a daddy and worries about his lack of money & health insurance before finally revealing his desire for progeny.

The song was my introduction to Grampall Jookabox, and it sparked an immediate infatuation with his new LP Ropechain, which I’ve been listening to almost non-stop for a few months. A fusion of experimental Indie-Rock, Punk/New Wave, Folk, Psychedelia, Noise, Hip-Hop, Blues, Gospel and Electronica drenched in so much dubby reverb and echo that the effects box might as well be considered an instrument in its own right, with surreal-but-purposeful songwriting, Ropechain has easily earned a place as one of my absolute favorite albums of 2008.

The result is something like Hot Chip and Animal Collective if they formed a super-group fronted by James Murphy. Or Gnarls Barkley if Cee-Lo were a chubby white guy from the Midwest instead of a chubby Black guy from the South. Rockier cuts, like “The One Thing,” “I’m Absolutley Freaked Out” and the Hendrix-esque “You Will Love My Boom,” are compatible with the recent works of Saul Williams and TV On the Radio. And it’s obvious Grampall Jookabox is heir to the Stooges and The Velvet Underground. But Ohio-via-New York avant-Rock ensemble Skeletons (a.k.a. Skeletons and the Girl-Faced Boys and Skeletons and the Kings of All Cities…whose newest album I just realized I need to obtain) might be his closest kin.

Betty DavisIf “The Girl Ain’t Preggers” hadn’t won me over songs like “Black Girls” and “Old Earth, Wash My Beat” would have. Over rattling junkyard drums and percussion, a chugging Radiohead-ish fuzz guitar riff and back-masked vocal samples Adamson pays tribute to Betty Davis and snarls “Black girls build skyscrapers with their brains…Black girls do shit that I can’t explain…A black girl is the mamamama of everyone you see” on the former. While wind-chime tinkles and Hippie drum-circle rhythms prop up his spaced-out chanting and anachronistic (for an Indie record) 5%er vernacular.

The too-short “Ghost,” where Anderson pitch-shifts his vocals about a brush with the supernatural into something as eerily phantasmal as the synths and jangling mechanical noises the track is constructed from, is another favorite. As is the baroque, Cali-style psychedelia of “I Will Save Young Michael,” a lengthy musical letter to a fellow son of Indiana, Michael Jackson. Atop layers of guitar, vibraphones and whistles Adamson laments Jackson’s lost youth, proclaims his talent “magic,” and finally invites him back home to Indiana where he can dance like he did as child.

Very few records came as highly recommended by me this year as Grampall Jookabox’s Ropechain does. And I don’t know if anything was as joyfully weird as Ropechain. As scarily freaky as it is it just might be the feel-good album of the year! If you need more convincing though there is an unusually large amount of material from the album available for free download on the internets. And God knows, if you’re planning on makin’ babies you’re gonna need to get as much shit for free as you possibly can!
