Planning to Vote Today? You Might as Well(s)

It’s Tuesday, November 4th, which means that all across the United States of America it’s Election Day. Today, we elect a new president for our nation. I’ve made no secret of the fact that I want Barack Obama to be that president. But whoever wins (just let me go on record here that I don’t believe John McCain can win without resorting to fraud on a scale so massive that it would dwarf the crimes of the Republicans in 2000 and 2004) we will finally drop the curtain on eight disastrous years of George W. Bush and his administration.

So it’s Fall…You want to engage in some democracy and you might have to stand around waiting in line for your chance to do so…You need some voting music, right? I’m thinking something serious, but not dour or depressing. After all, our election themes this year are “hope” and “change.” But it needs to reflect both the season and the occasion…It needs to be NPR-esque…And it’d be nice if it bridged the academic and the authentic…Sort of like a certain dude who went to Harvard and then took his degree to the streets of Chicago. Something like a chick who plays violin over beats maybe?

Emily Wells ‘The Symphonies: Dreams Memories & Parties’Remember that Israeli broad who called herself the “Hip-Hop cellist?” Well, today’s featuree, Emily Wells, ain’t her. On her self-produced and recorded album The Symphonies: Dreams Memories & Parties the multi-instrumentalist–who plays violin, banjo, organ, synthesizer, samplers, drum machines, xylophone, metallophone, glockenspiel, ukulele, guitar and sings–acts as a one-woman orchestra, multi-tracking her own performances and using effects pedals to mimic the tones of cellos and violas. Joined by bassist Joey Reina, drummer Sam Halterman and cellist Jessica Catron her compositions mix lush symphonic arrangements, supple basslines, broken drum beats, and electronic programming.

The Los Angeles resident begins her ten-part symphony with a tune called “In the Barrel of a Gun,” a concoction of cinematically sawn strings, rattling tambourines and a cascade of drum fills which culminates with Björk-like chanting of the phrase “nothing’s gonna stop us now.” It’s a sentiment those of us casting ballots in favor of change today should hold on to tightly. If misapplying her lyrics isn’t good enough for you, she gets explicitly political on “America’s Mercy War,” where a subtle Reggae skank and dubby spacial effects inform her slinking symphonics and righteous judgments of America’s idolatrous greed, voracious appetite and penchant for violent bullying.

On her MySpace page Wells says she loves “rap music and Vivaldi” and claims the first record she remembers really hearing was Simon and Garfunkel’s “Sound of Silence.” All three influences–Hip-Hop, Classical and baroque Folk-Pop–inform “The Story,” a quaking cut where she gets her Nelly Furtado-esque autobiographical rap/sing on alongside guest Count Bass D. And as odd as it may seem, it’s to Furtado, as well as her recent co-conspirator Timbaland, that my mind kept returning while listening to The Symphonies.

Beth Gibbons of PortisheadVocally Wells repeatedly reminded me of the petite Portuguese/Canadian, with hints of Portishead frontwoman Beth Gibbons‘ melodramatically nasally whine and the aforementioned Björk’s precociousness thrown in for good measure. And her beats often sound like a mixture of Timbaland’s convulsively thumping synth-n-drum-machinery and Dr. Dre’s self-consciously ornate gangsta Boom-Bap, if they were both classically trained musicians in love with the Hip-Hop aesthetic rather than Hip-Hop beatmakers out to prove their musicianship.

So what about all that hope and change we’re all looking forward to? She drops a load of it on us with the optimistic ditty “The Sunshine,” a track that puts all her symphonic ambitions in the pure Pop music context they belong. Mimicking the golden-glowing, string-laden Chamber-Pop of The Beatles and The Beach Boys, she crafts a playfully soaring love-song backed by molassus-thick bass and a lopingly-paced neck-snapping drum-beat. The song is ornately orchestral, sweetly flavored with the harmonies and candy-coated sentiment of classic Pop, and it swaggers with the rhythmic and low-end thump of Hip-Hop.
