A Many-Hued Existence

I get tons of e-mails every day from bands, musicians, singers, rappers, public relations firms and even other bloggers asking me to listen to “their” music. Only a tiny number of those e-mails contain links to music which is actually of some interest to me. And amongst that privileged minority only a paltry few lead me to discover an act I’m enthusiastic enough about to pass word of them on to you. Today’s post is about two artists who’s e-mails found my ears welcome.

Brittany Bosco ‘Spectrum’Savannah, Georgia-based Future-Soulstress Britanny Bosco knew what she was doing when she e-mailed me. She sent me a couple of songs and then, when I told her I liked them, sent me some more. She kept me abreast of goings on via e-mails and even inspired me to friend her on MySpace because I didn’t want to lose track of her. And I’m glad I did, because it put me near the front of the line when she dropped her new downloadable EP Spectrum this weekend.

Homegirl is clearly a student of Erykah Badu, and a comrade of Muhsinah & Janelle Monáe, if those broads had beats from Flying Lotus and were informed by the kitschy Throwback Rap and neo-Dungeon Fam aesthetics of those Hollyweerd dudes. On “Black Keys” and “Glitch” she engages in nervous meditations on freedom and–technologically enhanced–romance over creeping vibraphones & upright bass then RZA-ish synths & guitar chops, and sludgy downtempo synths respectively. “8-Track” is a celebration of music set to a throwback breakbeat-Funk track replete with horn & flute accompaniment. While most of the remaining cuts plumb more obviously Jazz-inspired depths, with “Blues for Blue” set to a smokey Rhodes-fueled cabaret crawl, and “Black and White” stripping things down to a lonely–and recognizable for Thom Yorke fans–piano melody.

Everett James ‘Life’Another Georgian, Atlanta-based Everett James, did everything right in his promo push when he e-mailed me a link to his album LIFE saying here’s my “full-length FUNK album.” Apparently it’s been on the shelf for a while in some form or another, though it’s only recently become available digitally via online retailers like Amazon. But it’s dope, and not that widely known, so I’m trying to give as many people as possible the heads up on it. And all it took was the right kind of e-mail!

A lo-fidelity basement project, LIFE finds the Asheville, North Carolina-raised multi-instrumentalist cutting the distance between Cody ChesnuTT, Peven Everett and Terence Trent D’Arby. Even in digital format it’s styled like a vinyl record, with static-y needle-drops signaling the start of its two “sides.” Side one’s “B Who U R” flips Prince-esque drum-machine Funk, the smooth, Jazz-influenced “Body Talk” & “Lay U Down” recall Stevie Wonder, Sade and Masters At Work, “Searching” fuses squiggly Broken-Beat & old-school electronic R&B, and “My Star” is lite-n-airy Hip-Hop-Soul. While side two boasts the rootsy “Broken Blues,” the simultaneously psychedelic & New Wave-y “In the Wind,” the Reggae-Rocker “No More,” “All In My Head” a Parliament-meets-programming psyche-ballad and the rain-soaked, bass-heavy title-track.

On top of all the music-related e-mails vying for my attention I still get all the requisite SPAM about discount pharmaceuticals, “business propositions” from very polite (and fictional) foreign dignitaries and of course pornography that anyone might expect to receive. So sometimes it’s even a chore discerning the e-mails about music I don’t like from the messages that are total junk. But it’s the rare joints like these that make sifting through my in-box every day worth it.
