Money vs. The Mummy (in 3-D!)

Skeletons and Japanther

Monday I mentioned how I had to abandon my plans to give scantily clad women money in exchange for the opportunity to watch them shake their butts in honor of my birthday. But today’s post is about a pair of bands who’ve released albums that’re actually about currency and gyrating one’s posterior.

Skeletons ‘Money’Founded by Chicagoan Matt Mehlan, in Oberlin, Ohio, multi-member improvisational avant-garde Pop band Skeleton$ have since moved to New York and gone by the far more unweildy names Skeletons and the Girl-Faced Boys and Skeletons and the Kings of All Cities. They released their first two projects via Shinkoyo, a DIY arts collective Mehlan co-founded, before releasing two outstanding LPs–2005’s Git, which fit bits of Chamber-Pop, Soft Rock, Funk & Jazz together using squealing synthesizers & bubbling programming for glue into a Krautrock mosaic streaked with Free-Jazz and Noise/Drone coloration, and 2007’s Lucas, which was weirder, noisier, more organic and decidedly psychedelic, flexing a cacophonous junkyard aesthetic part Deerhoof, Animal Collective and Antibalas–with Ghostly International. Their newest disc, titled Money, is out on venerable German indie Tomlab.

Money dances precariously atop an imaginary fence between the group’s last two efforts. It’s funkier than Lucas, but unlike Git it rings with the sound of wood, brass and steel not plastic boxes with rubber pads and blinking lights. And though the songwriting is focused to a point almost sharp enough to make it a concept album Money’s still a weird fucking record! Perhaps inspired by living in New York, “The THINGS” and “Eleven (It’ll RAIN)” evoke Talking Heads‘ elastically spazzy tropical Art-Punk. “BOOOM! (Money),” a frenetic 11-minute jam, and the churning “Ripper a.k.a. The Pillows” offer a clue as to what Radiohead might sound like if they recorded with Dave Sitek. And the synth-laden “gonna get paid” anthem “STEPPER a.k.a. Work,” an indie/hipster R&B roller that’s sorta the anti “Be Thankful for What You Got,” should be every (non drug-dealing) hustler’s theme-song this winter.

Skeletons “STEPPER a.k.a. Work”

Japanther ‘Tut Tut, Now Shake Ya Butt’Brooklyn, New York-based Japanther are every bit as noisy as Skeletons despite the fact that even the former members of the latter outnumber the current members of the former. The experimental Noise/Punk/performance art outfit, whose last full-length Skuffed Up My Huffy was profiled in this space just over a year ago, consist only of a pair of dudes who between them play drums, bass, keyboards, tapes/samples, a drum machine and sing. They’ve released way too many records to encapsulate here since bandmembers Ian Vanek and Matt Reilly dropped their CDR debut while attending Pratt Institute in 2001. But that’s okay because what’s really important is the art-school heroes’ newest record, a star-studded mash-up of Punk, poetry, noise, sing-a-long melodies, raps, samples, scratches, beats and adrenaline titled Tut Tut, Now Shake Ya Butt, which is out now (on limited blue vinyl) on Montana-based Wäntage USA.

Serving as executive producer, Penny Rimbaud–founder of one of my favorite Punk acts, anarcho-art-Punks Crass–also contributes spoken recitation to four of the album’s eleven tracks. The poetry pieces, where Rimbaud drawls like a Shakespearean Vincent Price over thudding drum machines, surprise for how much they favor Current 93’s post-industrial apocalyptic Folk. The album’s other guest, Naeem of Spank Rock, fits in more seamlessly on “Radical Businessman” chanting “1, 2, 3, 4, fuck the cops” over gurgling keys and bashing drums like the Hip-Hop generation’s answer to The Stooges. And like another iconic band from Punk’s formative years, The Ramones, Japanther’s hyper-active tunes–like “Bumpin’ Rap Tapes,” “Um Like Yer Smile Is Totally Ruling Me…,” “Bloated Corpse” and their cover of New Bad Things‘ “The Dirge”–work so well because deep-down they’re simple, catchy Pop songs in the vein of Rock ‘N Roll’s heyday.

Oh well…I guess if I absolutely have to replace one acronym with another I’m glad I got DIY in exchange for TNA.
