Beats for Your Face (Or Lack Thereof)

So much for chilly temperatures and pretty powdery coatings…All of a sudden it’s a balmy 60 degrees outside with intermittent rain and it’s windy as a sonovabitch! So, what sort of soundtrack does a grey-skied, puddle-packed, wind-blown Wednesday deserve? I’m thinking something moody and changeable, that suits the days’ melancholy caste but still sparks with color and energy. And luckily I have a couple of records–collages of samples and beats from a pair of beatmakers whose fluid production complements the fluid-soaked atmosphere outside–that fit the bill perfectly!

Small Professor ‘Slow Bus’First, from Philadelphia comes Small Professor–a cat whose irony-suffused moniker could be taken as sickeningly adorable or backpacker-angeringly ballsy–and his Slowbus LP. It’s a thirteen track, near half-hour-long collection of instrumentals, a high percentage of which are built from samples of very familiar tunes, woven together using overlapping themes and sundry sampled vocal segues. Its refference points are records like Donuts and the Beat Konducta series, but Small Pro’s beats are more clearly inspired by folks like Large Professor and Prince Paul than either Dilla or Madlib and he shares even more in common with underground beatsmiths like Blockhead and Joe Beats, though his penchant for really obvious samples is kind of a hybridization of MF Doom and Kanye West’s steezes. Those in-your-face loop-n-chop jobs–like “Kelis,” where he whoos Nas‘ missus with snatches of Billy Paul, “Stevie Said So,” one of the illest Stevie Wonder samples I’ve heard in a while, and the Peanuts homage “Winter Leave Pt. 0″–are some of my favorite cuts on Slowbus. But the tracks that make up the latter half of the album–like the smoothed out Doom tribute “MM…Foodstamps,” the jazzy late-night “Theme From Mohawk,” “The Sky Is Falling,” which could soundtrack a ’70s action flick, and the nervous horn-and-string-driven “Oh & Ran”–are every bit as killer.

00Genesis ‘Dream Catcher’Then there’s Dream Catcher, the debut EP from an enigmatic beatmaker named 00Genesis who hails from Maryland and comes to us via the same Rxlngr camp that gave us Muhsinah. It’s a bit over 20-minutes in length, boasts eleven tracks that for the most part collapse upon each other beat-tape style, and whatever it features in the way of samples aren’t of the immediately recognizable variety. Propelled by stumbling syncopation and topped with the warbling & beeping tones of keyboards and synthesizers the beats on Dream Catcher follow the techno-organic blueprint laid out by Dilla at his most industrial and favor the output of post-Dilla Boom-Clap beatmeisters from the Midwest & West Coast such as Dabrye, Flying Lotus, Daedelus, Black Spade and Lab Techs. Only a handful of beats are fleshed out into full-length tracks, with a number clocking in at under a minute, so one second you’re like “oh shit, this beat is dope,” and the next it’s over and you’re reaching for the button to skip back. Some of my favorites include the kinetic OutKast/Janelle Monáe-ish fantasy “Cryptic Dream,” “Button Mashing,” where Me and You and Everyone We Know-style toy keyboard melodies dance atop reverberating dumpster-sludge kick-drums, the super-glitchy & bass-heavy “Early Bird 2″ and the sizzling “Poprocks,” which sounds like the “Pause” remix Hot Chip never made.

If there’s better accompaniment for stomping through or high-stepping over puddles, dodging splashes from passing traffic, running and ducking downpours under awnings and getting hoodied down to protect oneself from the wind I don’t want to hear it.
