“You’re the Best, Around…” (El Keter’s Favorite Albums of 2008, Day One)

Out of all the records I enjoyed during 2008 I chose twenty of them as my favorites.

 I put them all in alphabetical order and wrote about them.

 Here are the first five…

black_spade-to_serve_with_love.jpgIn 1988 poet, teacher, philosopher and metaphysician Lawrence Krisna Parker described Hip-Hop’s talent pool as “a lot of suckers with colorful names.” He decried these chromatic suctioneers as hyperbolic braggarts whose boastfulness amounted to little due to their lack of talent. His assessment of rappers’ personality defects and commitment to excellence is as applicable today as it was then, probably more so. But if umbrage can be taken with one of his points it’s the one about “suckers with colorful names.” These days the naming conventions amongst the Rap rank-and-file have become trite and cliché-ridden, and artists with the most literally colorful names, like Saint Louis, Missouri’s Black Spade (and the next artist on this list), are some of the few making records worth a damn. Spade dropped his OM Records debut To Serve With Love early in the year, but it remains one of the best, most progressive Hip-Hop records released in 2008. Twenty years later a lot of rappers are still “wick-wick-wack,” but some serve the game with love.

crac_and_johnsonandjonson.gifIt doesn’t get more colorful than Blu, a Los Angeles-based emcee who emerged a few short years ago and has released a total of three full-length LPs in just over a year’s time. His Exile-produced debut, Below the Heavens, was one of the standout releases of last year. By April of this year he and Detroit-based emcee/producer Ta’Raach released The Piece Talks, a full-length collaborative effort as C.R.A.C. which proved both a tribute to the great duos of Hip-Hop’s rawer youth and one of the most bravely experimental records the genre produced this year. A few months later he dropped the long-awaited album teaming he and Long Beach-based producer Mainframe as Johnson&Jonson, a release more aesthetically grimy than any of his previous which hearkened to the days of dusty basement-session-era Wu-Tang and bridged the gap between old-school Dickies-and-Chuck Taylors Cali Rap and contemporary indieground Hip-Hop. Not-so-colorfully-named rappers might get more accolades and more sales, but in 2008 Hip-Hop’s lifeblood is Blu.

clutchyhopkins_and_shawnleeandclutchyhopkins.gifAlmost two years after I first covered him in this space the question remains, “who is Clutchy Hopkins?” The real identity of the bearded savant supposedly lost in the Mojave desert for decades has become a favorite subject of discussion–and in some cases derision–across the internet. But whether there really is a “Clutchy Hopkins,” whether or not the flannel-clad old dude in the photographs is Clutchy (or even involved with the recording of the music at all for that matter), or whether it’s all an awesome publicity stunt is secondary to the fact that the music made in the name of Clutchy Hopkins is incredible. In 2008 we were treated to a double-dose of crusty-beard Jazz-Funk-fusion instrumentals from the ascetic sessioneer’s vault, his sophomore full-length and Ubiquity Records debut Walking Backwards, which arrived early in the year, and Clutch of the Tiger, a collaboration with labelmate Shawn Lee, which dropped just in time for Fall. Both albums were outstanding, and remain in regular rotation on my space-starved iPod to this day.

the_cool_kids-the_bake_sale.jpgAnother album that hasn’t left my iPod since it dropped is The Bake Sale, the debut full-length from Chicago’s The Cool Kids. I only gave the album faint and passing praise when it hit stores in June because of how over-hyped the duo of Chuck Inglish and Mikey Rocks were and didn’t feel like I needed to contribute to the over-saturation which was already resulting in backlash from cranky netizens. But putting all the hype and all the hate aside the truth is that The Bake Sale was one of the best, most consistently entertaining Hip-Hop albums of the year. Sure, I’d already heard most of the songs on it already, but finally having all these loose tracks together in one package made a difference. It was cohesive and fun, and it was obvious that these kids weren’t trying that hard (in fact, their easy-going coolness may be a bit difficult for status-savvy kids used to the trappings of mainstream Rap to embrace) but were just making the music they wanted to make. And real talk, if they got Rakim over that “What It Is” beat for a remix or some such all the self-proclaimed Hip-Hop purists furiously typing “fuck those hipsters” would be hugging their jocks.

the_foreign_exchange-leave_it_all_behind.jpgNot too long after KRS-One critiqued his braggadocios brethren on “My Philosophy” a trio of Hip-Hop artists from Long Island known for their eccentric behavior released an album mourning their own demise on which they criticized rappers who abandoned Hip-Hop’s underground roots in favor of “all that R&B shit,” explaining that R&B should stand for “Rap and Bullshit.” Other emcees of the era, from Phife to Erick Sermon voiced similar opinions on songs like “Jazz (We’ve Got)” and “Crossover.” But in time even those artists would bend to trends and incorporate smoothed out R&B and even overtly Pop elements into their music. Today mainstream Rap and commercial R&B are virtually indistinguishable; rappers want to be singers, singers want to be rappers, Rap artists regularly appear on R&B artists’ songs and vice-versa. Enter The Foreign Exchange and their sophomore album Leave It All Behind, an unabashed R&B record from a group fronted by Phonte of Little Brother, one of underground Hip-Hop’s most acclaimed acts of recent memory. It didn’t fall into any of the traps which ensnare attempts at mixing Hip-Hop and R&B, and avoided the pitfalls that make contemporary R&B a shadow of the genre’s former glory. In short it was the best R&B album of the year, and one of 2008’s best albums of any genre…No bullshit.
