“You’re the Best, Around…” (El Keter’s Favorite Albums of 2008, Day Two)

Out of all the records I enjoyed during 2008 I chose 20 of them as my favorites.

I put them all in alphabetical order and wrote about them.

grampall_jookabox-ropechain.jpgLast week I got an e-mail from Asthmatic Kitty Records announcing that a certain website gave Ropechain, the sophomore album from Indianapolis, Indiana’s Grampall Jookabox a less-than-glowing review. Being good sports they offered the album for sale at a reduced price in deference to the 5.4 out of 10 star review the album was given for a few days. I have to admit I only rarely read reviews…I talk to friends about records and get their takes, but I don’t want to be influenced by the press or the blogosphere…Besides, I consider myself a “music patron” not a “music critic,” and I don’t particuarly enjoy “criticism” of any art. But I read this review and was prompted to share some quotes from it later that day when m. Cody held up her iPod on the bus to show me she was listening to Grampall Jookabox’s song “Black Girls,” one of her (and my) favorite cuts from the album. After hearing the reviewer’s criticism of the song she–as one of the “Black Girls” the tune praises–loudly hypothesized that “he’s never had sex with a Black girl,” to the amusement of our fellow commuters. Of course everyone’s entitled to their opinion, and nobody should be villainized for liking or disliking an album…But if my opinion matters, Ropechain is one of my favorites of ‘08.

hot_chip-made_in_the_dark.jpgI have a confession to make…After the incredible run they’ve enjoyed since the initial Moshi Moshi release of their 2004 debut Coming On Strong I was kind of worried that Hot Chip–a band who’s been tied with of Montreal for a number of years for the honor of being my favorite recording act and favorite live band–was going to drop the ball with their third full-length Made In the Dark. My fears weren’t prompted by the band itself, or the quality of tracks like “Shake a Fist” and “Ready for the Floor” released in anticipation of the album but a generally pessimistic attitude that dictates all good things must end…A lifetime of listening to the Hip-Hop genre which only rarely produces artists whose brilliance lasts beyond a classic debut…And the fact that these guys remix a thousand songs a month, leak one-off tracks all the time and pepper most of their singles with non-album b-sides…So their dopeness was bound to run out at some point. Happily their dopeness didn’t run out before they recorded Made In the Dark, and it hasn’t run out in the ten months since. The album’s been on my Nano since it dropped and still to this day I never skip tracks like “Bendable Poseable,” “Shake a Fist,” “Ready for the Floor,” “Touch Too Much” and “Wrestlers” when they come on in a shuffle. “Wrestlers” even made it onto my shortlist for song of the year.

james_pants-welcome.jpgLike I said, I don’t read reviews…So I have no idea what the critical reaction to Spokane, Washington-based DJ/producer James Pants‘ Stones Throw debut Welcome was when it dropped this Summer. I think I recall hearing from someone in the radio game that reaction to the album had been mixed, though the only way the reaction to it in my house could be considered mixed is if you consider the mixture of joy and elation it spurred in a mixed company of ethnicities and genders. I pronounced Welcome one of the triumphs of 2008 in my original blog about it way back in May and that pronouncement still stands as the album has never left rotation on any of the media devices in mine and m. Cody’s household since it’s release. A collection of succinct compositions that embrace such diverse styles as Funk, Punk, New Wave, Electro, Disco, Jazz, psychedelia, breakbeats and lo-fi electronic kitsch–and boasting such infectious eclecticism as the Deon Davis-assisted “KA$H” and “Crystal Lite,” the space-bassy “Cosmic Rapp,” the Paradise Garage-revival “We’re Through” and the Bruce Haack tribute “My Tree”–Welcome is everything the practitioner of our post-Hip-Hop phonograph culture could possibly ask for.

kitty_daisy_and_lewis-kitty_daisy_and_lewis.jpgLiving in an unrepentantly urban environment but loving music that goes far beyond the playlists of the local “Urban” or “Rhythmic Contemporary”-format Top-40 radio station and the photocopied covers of the neighborhood mixtape spots can result in all manner of surreal experiences. Me and the homie Emeyesi have often found ourselves driving between the run-down tenement buildings that dot our hometown’s landscape, windows down, blasting some of the least “hood” music one could conceive of the way our neighbors might the new Lil Wayne single. It’s always a little funny thinking what we must sound like to passers-by and pedestrians more used to the sound of thunderous 808s and rattling trunks, but I’ve never put as much contemplation into the juxtaposition between my soundtrack and my surroundings as I have since I started tooling around the city with the sounds of London-based hillbilly music-revivalists Kitty, Daisy & Lewis blaring through my ear-buds. That line of thought usually terminates in my mulling over what drives a trio of teenagers to adopt the countrified sound and trappings of pre-Rock & Roll-era Rhythm & Blues, Blues, jook-joint music, Bluegrass, and ukelele camp, recording on primitive equipment, hand-manufacturing 78RPM records and dressing the part. Then I become fascinated by how authentic they sound, I get the “doo-doo face” and I start nodding to their music as furiously as I would the illest Hip-Hop classic.

lightspeed_champion-falling_off_the_lavender_bridge.jpgFormer Test Icicles guitarist/vocalist Dev Hynes engendered similar feelings when he changed his name to Lightspeed Champion and released Falling Off the Lavender Bridge, an album that glued mopey, irony and sarcasm-soaked Indie-Rock to the sort of dustily strummed & melancholically sighing guitars, church-pew shaking organs and rousingly emotive orchestral arrangements not heard since the heyday of Nashville Country. It was a folky, Country-tinged, cabaret-style take on the too-witty-for-his-own-good Indiemo pioneered by the likes of The Smiths, where emotional vulnerability and literate lyricism imbued with an intimate understanding of, and a raw-nerved alienation from, contemporary culture are at a premium. And the fact that the stellar quality of the songwriting Dev exhibits throughout–which is intelligent, emotive, often painful, and above all else catchy–was never even hinted at by his former band just makes it that much more of a triumph. Furthermore, with songs like “All My Friends are Listening to Crunk”–where he passingly laments the musical infatuations of his associates–he even hints at an understanding of those of us with atypical taste in music compared to that of the people we surround ourselves with…Ya know, people who listen to music like his while walking to the bodega.
