“You’re the Best, Around…” (El Keter’s Favorite Albums of 2008, Day Three)

Out of all the records I enjoyed during 2008 I chose 20 of them as my favorites.

 I put them all in alphabetical order and wrote about them.

 Here are another five…

lykke_li-youth_novels.jpgAdorably precocious Swedish Indie-Pop chanteuse Lykke Li out-Feist-ed Canadian Indie-Folk femme Leslie Feist simply by being…well…more feisty. The nigh-unpronounceable newcomer’s initially self-released debut Youth Novels was–in my mind–a more apt follow-up to Feist’s 2003 breakthrough Let It Die than even the Broken Social Scene-ster’s own 2007 mega-hit album The Reminder was. It combined the best bits of both–slinky under-the-mirror-ball grooves, humble folksiness, smoke-stained cabaret noirism, and poppy orchestral classicism–and steeped them in Lolita-esque sexuality, fresh-off-the-boat charm, and a re-invigorated interpretation of the sort of girly Dance-Pop that has made superstars of hyper-sexual child-women from Madonna to Britney Spears. As much a triumph for producer Björn Yttling (of Peter Bjorn and John) as for the 22-year-old singer herself, Youth Novels was probably the best debut album of the year and one of the strongest debuts in recent memory, setting Li up as one of the most promising new international Pop artists of the day. Guest-shots for fellow Swede Kleerup and N.A.S.A. (alongside Kanye West and Santogold) only bolstered her position.

mc_esoteric-esoteric_vs_japan.jpgOne of the worst birthday presents I ever received was a day-trip to Boston from one of my former significant others. Aside from the terribleness of the day itself the most memorable thing about the trip was picking up a local newspaper that had then-rising Boston Rap stars Mr. Lif and Esoteric on the cover. In short order Lif went on to national success on the Definitive Jux label and Esoteric (alongside partner 7L) gained a loyal following of his own.  And while I found myself increasingly pleased with Lif’s endeavors Esoteric’s found my ears less-and-less receptive. After a few years of recycled tough-guy boom-bap I’d all but counted Eso out…But everything changed with the release of 2006’s A New Dope…And surprisingly he ended up perched near the top of my list of favorite Hip-Hop artists when he followed it up with his stellar solo debut Egoclapper in 2007. This year he cemented himself as one of the genre’s most vital practitioners–a true-school purist who’s not afraid to be himself, buck convention and try a little experimenting–with the MF Doom-esque Esoteric Vs. Japan (Pterodactyl Takes Japan!), an album of Bostonian bravado backed by beats constructed out of samples culled exclusively from Japanese artists.

mgmt-oracular_spectacular.jpgWhen French scuzzballs Justice remixed Brooklyn Psychtronica duo MGMT’s “Electric Feel” this Summer I promptly proclaimed it one of the best tracks of the year. Even before the Electro-House evangelists got their dirty mitts on it “Electric Feel” was one of my favorite songs of the year, but they reshaped what was a slithering slice of Bee Gees-esque Disco-revivalism into an ultra-modern iteration of the sort of muscular Dance-Pop that Michael Jackson would be making right now if he actually gave a damn about coming remotely close to recapturing the dopeness of Off the Wall and Thriller. There’s a reason it was recently nominated for a Grammy for “best remix.” But like I said, the original mix was near perfect itself, and the really ill thing about it is that it didn’t sound a bit like anything else on MGMT’s debut full-length Oracular Spectacular. The album was a glorious mess of freaky Folk, psychedelia, Prog-Rock, Electronica and lush Chamber-Pop imbued with youthful rebellion, neo-hippie New Age sloganeering which stretched between feel-good affirmations and dire prophecies, and post-internet-age hipster/art-student bohemianism. It also produced one of my favorite videos of the year, the Eric Wareheim-directed clip for “The Youth.” I absolutely adored it, and like many of the records on this list kept it on my iPod all year long.

of_montreal-skeletal_lamping.jpgI don’t think there was another record I anticipated more during 2008 than Skeletal Lamping, the ninth full-length album from Athens, Georgia-based Indie-Pop outfit of Montreal. If I’m being completely honest my anticipation for Skeletal Lamping began before their previous album, 2007’s Hissing Fauna, are You the Destroyer?, was even officially released. So, I’d been waiting nearly two years for it before it finally hit stores in a myriad of fancifully packaged special edition formats in October of this year. My patience was rewarded when Skeletal Lamping emerged as one of the most progressive Rock albums of the year…And I mean that in the sense that so-called “Indie” or “Alternative” Rock has presented itself as “progressive” throughout its three-odd decades of existence but even more so in the way that Rock in the 1970s–when it was at the crossroads of Glam, Punk, Disco, Power-Pop, Soul, Metal, post-’60s Chamber-Pop, Funk and then new-fangled Electronica–was so progressive that it birthed an entire “Prog-Rock” sub-genre unto itself. Like Prince and the Mael brothers circle-jerking to a stream of internet porn on a patchwork blanket made from scraps of that last half-century of popular music Skeletal Lamping bent genders, blurred racial lines, fused fantasy & reality and turned all conventions & expectations–aside from those about Kevin Barnes and company pushing the envelope with every new release–on its ear.

portishead-third.jpgOkay, so I guess I’d been anticipating the long-awaited third LP from Bristol, United Kingdom’s flagship Trip-Hop act Portishead since 1996, which totally trumps the wait for of Montreal’s Skeletal Lamping. But to be perfectly frank, by the time 2008 rolled around I’d pretty much given up on the prospect of Portishead dropping a follow-up to their decade-old self-titled sophomore LP so when they did it came as a happy surprise. Granted, “happy” isn’t a word usually associated with Portishead’s gloomy, weathered soundscapes or the gin-and-cigarette-smoke-saturated vocals of their frontwoman Beth Gibbons, but the arrival of their new record was undoubtedly a joyous occasion. Odd as it may sound, the music on the appropriately titled Third was in its own way a mixture of darkness and light. No doubt the band was every bit as cheerless as in the past, but the dour, post-Armageddon desolation of the album’s exterior was–like any apocalypse should be–cracked by a delirious ecstasy that shone with a glimmer of optimism. And like the millennial utopias so many prophets promise us await after the harrowing realities of their third-world-war end-times scenarios, Portishead’s Third was ultimately worth the wait.
