“…for the Benefit of Humans and Animals.” - The Edicts of Ashoka, 3rd c. BCE

Animal Collective

With a full week of the brand new year firmly behind us I think it’s safe to say that 2009 hasn’t begun on the most humane of notes. Iraq continues to be plagued by suicide bombers. Tensions between nuclear superpowers India and Pakistan are heightened after the revelation that the men responsible for the Mumbai massacre entered India from Pakistan. Emboldened by the maneuverings of Pakistani troops to their border with India the Taliban is strengthening its position in the country, even as US forces converge on the Pakistan/Afghan border. And Israel is indulging in a veritable orgy of hostility against Palestine, inspiring Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal to smack-talk president-elect Barack Obama even though he hasn’t even been inaugurated yet. Which is saying nothing of the dismal economic situation confronting us both here in the United States and abroad.

The Ashoka ChakraMuch of the aforementioned turmoil emanates from the Middle Eastern and South Asian subcontinents, regions which feature heavily in The Story of India, a six-part documentary that began airing on PBS this week. The first episode wasn’t corralled by India’s borders as they exists today, making the rounds to many of the troubled locales that dot the crisis-ridden landscape of present-day Eurasia. But a segment about Ashoka, an emperor who ruled many of the lands in question from 273 to 232 BCE stood out because after witnessing the havoc wreaked by his own desire for conquest he turned away from war and dedicated his life to promoting Buddhism and ideals such as nonviolence, humane treatment of both animals and people, tolerance, and justice. One commentator, impressed with his position on the treatment of animals, pointed out that cruelty to animals is often a sign that one is capable of cruelty towards his fellow man, which caused me to remark that all too often humans are quick to treat one another like animals, if not worse.

Which leads me to Animal Collective, a group of musicians from the Baltimore area who provide a human link between the sort of trend-conscious hipsters that keep American Apparel in business and the type of karma-concerned hippies that might find Ashoka’s edicts compatible with a lifestyle of veganism, humanism, “going green” and doing a lot of drugs. The band, whose vascilating lineup is currently pared down to the trio of Avey Tare, Panda Bear and Geologist, are two-time Blogarhythms featurees, and their name has been dropped with some frequency in this space. In fact, I just mentioned them as one of the bands who easily could have made an extensive “best of ‘08″ list in yesterday’s post, an accolade they earned due in large part to the song “Cobwebs,” a dreamy tune that envisioned a communal utopia–free of violence, where children and the elderly live without fear–that would’ve met Ashoka’s approval, whose constant presence on my iPod since its early-Summer release is owed in equal measure to its touchy/feely posture and its melodic beauty.

Animal Collective ‘Merriweather Post Pavilion’Their achievements during ‘08 can however remain in the past, as the group is releasing their ninth full-length album Merriweather Post Pavilion, which is out now on double vinyl and will hit retailers in other formats on January 20th via Domino Records. Reeputed as much for a “sound” that effortlessly fuses psychedelic Freak-Folk, arty Noise-Rock and baroque Pop as they are notorious for their experimentation, the band keep fans and critics alike on their toes by giving their Beach Boys-esque harmonies, rambunctious racket-making, idyllically sentimental & universally fraternalistic songwriting and hallucinatory lyricism a club-savvy makeover this time out. Don’t get me wrong, Animal Collective is as sonically exotic and lyrically peculiar as ever on Merriweather Post Pavilion, but the twittering synths, rumbling bass and four-on-the-floor thud of album opener “In the Flowers” (a song that begins with a mantra-like repetition of the phrase “you can dance”) make this paean to longing–which boasts lines like “if I could just leave my body for the night” and references to “the deep reveling rhythm”–sound every bit the ecstasy-soaked club anthem.

I don’t have a clue as to what’s behind the group’s adoption of the accoutrement of Electronic Dance Music. Perhaps it’s their way of acknowledging their hometown’s club culture? Or maybe they’ve just been listening to M.I.A., Hot Chip and Santogold like everybody else has? I dunno…But when I hear bass-heavy tracks like “My Girls,” “Lion In a Coma,” “Taste,” “Also Frightened,” “Brothersport,” “Daily Routine” and “Summertime Clothes,” which are animated by drum-machine rhythms that fluctuate between insistent kick-drum knocks & crunky low-slung skitters and bathed in shades of translucent synthesizer & keyboard tones I’m inclined towards the latter. As is best demonstrated by “Brothersport,” the effect of all this jittery programming, thrumming bass, strobing synthesis and World Music-inspired brocade on the charmingly druggy avant-garde Folk-Pop Animal Collective remains expert at crafting is like getting pre-illness Brian Wilson hopped up on psilocybin then sending him to a Rave chaperoned by Maya Arulpragasam and Joe Goddard.

It’s different…Even for a band like Animal Collective, for whom being “different” is a built-in conceit…But I like it. And with difficulties piling up around the globe I can’t fault anybody, least of all a trio of un-ironic hipster/hippie hybrids, for encouraging the world to dance its problems away.
