Esau Mwamwaya and Radioclit are The Very Best

For those not in the know, or anyone who was just born too late to get the reference, the title of my four-part year-end wrap-up was inspired by the song “You’re the Best” by Joe “Bean” Esposito. The tune, which is one of my favorite soundtrack songs of all time, was one of the cornerstones of the soundtrack to the 1984 film The Karate Kid. Yeah, that’s why all of the “best of” posts had pictures of Ralph Macchio, Pat Morita and other cast-members from The Karate Kid in them.

Supreeme ‘American Badass’Though it was certainly a childhood favorite I can’t say I watch The Karate Kid all that often these days, save for the rare television broadcast. But “You’re the Best” was in regular rotation any time me and Emeyesi dropped a set of cheesy ’80s soundtrack songs on our “dusty” radio program for a number of years. It also got a boost from its use in “The Losing Edge,” an episode of the animated series South Park where Stan’s dad goes buckwild on “trash talking” Little League dads. And the tune re-entered my consciousness in a big way when indieground Atlanta Hip-Hop trio Supreeme rapped over it on their American Badass mixtape last year.

While it didn’t have any direct connection to Joe Esposito’s motivational seminar set to music, there was another mixtape released at the tail-end of 2008 which bore the conspicuously coincidental title of The Very Best. It didn’t make it into one of my Miyagi-blessed “best of ‘08″ posts, but it dropped concurrent to my compiling them so even if it had been the most trend-settingest thing since Daniel-san’s fight-winning crane kick (tell me you and your friends weren’t all imitating that shit back in ‘84) it still wouldn’t have made the cut. It was dope enough to carry over into my 2009 listening rotation however, so I’m recommending you add it to yours too!

The Very Best ‘Esau Mwamwaya and Radioclit are…’The sixteen-track project is the product of a collaboration between Malawi-born drummer and vocalist Esau Mwamwaya and London-based “Ghettopop” DJ/production duo Radioclit (whose credits include work with Bonde do Rolê, Yo! Majesty, Santogold & M.I.A., and others) under the adopted moniker The Very Best. A collection of eclectic remixes, remakes and reworks of familiar and not-so-familiar Indie, Pop, Hip-Hop and Dance tracks put together after Radioclit’s Etienne Tron bought a bicycle from the expatriate Malawian, it finds Tron and his partner Johan dropping the beats as Mwamwaya adds his mostly Chichewa-language vocals–sometimes alongside bits of the original, sometimes as an almost Reggae-inspired re-versioning all his own.

Emanating from the black-market-like atmosphere the overarching influence of DJ culture has incubated in the international music scene, The Very Best is an example of radically different ethno-musical cultures converging rather than clashing. It’s the same Globe Trekker-makes-a-mixtape act M.I.A.’s had such success with, so it’s no surprise her “Boyz” and “Paper Planes” both get the once-over here. Even the sound of a motherland-minded makeover of Ivy League Afro-Pop appropriators Vampire Weekend’s “Cape od Kwassa Kwassa” booty-shaking on the same dancefloor with the authentic Kwaito beats of “Wena” and “Sister Betina”–culled from cuts by South Africa’s DJ Cleo and Mgarimbe (by way of Aaliyah)–makes sense.

Cannibal Ox“Heart It Races” sounded like M.I.A. remixing The Lion King when Aussie fraggle-rockers Architecture In Helsinki dropped it back in ‘07, but in Mwamwaya’s hands it feels even more like a celebratory club anthem for animated animals than it did then. Meanwhile, the original Radioclit production “Funa Funa” conjures images of a simultaneously ancient and futuristic Africa where the traditional djembe and the Roland TR-808 have become interchangeable. And tracks like “Salota” featuring BLK JKS and “Hide and Seek”–which the flip beats from Cannibal Ox’s Bubble-Glam-sampling “Life’s Ill” and four-man French Rap crew TTC’s “Bâtards Sensibles”–are remarkable for how anachronistically un-World Music-y they are compared to some of the others.

The Very Best “Kamphopo”

It’s this cross-pollination of cultures, personalities, sounds and rhythms that makes The Very Best a success as a mixtape despite the fact that there’s not any traditional DJ mixing going on at all. It sounds like a party, a taxi-cab ride, a walk through the streets of a strange city, a night at the club, a day at a festival, an afternoon at an open-air-market, a trip through somebody’s record collection, and a night spent listening to folk songs and drums around a camp-fire all at once! But most of all it’s proof that the very best kind of music is all kinds of music.
