Pissed Off Stef’s Out of Category, He Ain’t There Wit Y’all, He Got a Positive Vibe But Ain’t Scared of Y’all

I can admit that my far-reaching musical tastes are at least partly a product of a dissatisfaction with much of what the Hip-Hop genre’s had to offer over the last decade. Whether it was shiny-suit materialism, strict adherence to formula, macho posturing, repetitive content, or stilted songwriting, there have been a myriad of reasons to be uninterested in the output of rappers. This left a blank space in my day-to-day soundtrack which I’ve found increasingly easy to fill with a manifold collection of music from a diverse selection of genres. The irony is that I probably wouldn’t have been as open-minded about trying out new music as I am if it weren’t for Hip-Hop’s polygenous origins.

P.O.S. ‘Never Better’That’s not say I don’t still listen to tons of Hip-Hop—’cause I do—just that the number of Rap records I don’t have a taste for these days leaves a lot of room to experiment. The flipside is that when Hip-Hop artists stand out as exceptional to me I usually find thier creativity, personality and commitment to progress all the more attention-worthy, not just compared to the scads of Rap artists they’re competing against, but the multitude of bands plucked from the heap of other genres vying for my ear as well. Minneapolis, Minnesota-born emcee P.O.S.—a one-time Punk musician whose brand of Hip-Hop draws on the DIY ethos, social, economic and political consciousness, sonic textures and vitriol that are hallmarks of the Punk genre—has been one of those artists since his 2006 Rhymesayers debut Audtion. He struck me as a vanguard of the Hip-Hop genre’s survival, revival and evolution then, and his new disc Never Better further evinces that notion.

Last year he and his Doomtree crew released a self-titled group LP—featuring contributions on the mic and behind the boards from the entire posse—which I dug, just not as much as P.O.S.’s two previous full-lengths. To be frank I wasn’t sure if my less enthusiastic reaction was a result of a comfortable familiarity with P.O.S.—born Stefon Alexander…his alias standing for “Pissed Off Stef” amongst other things—and his homies that signaled a creative plateau on their part, a settling into a formula that stripped away some of their unpredictability…So while I was anticipating Never Better, I wasn’t pinning a lot of expectations to it. The product however exceeds even the wildest expectations I could have saddled it with, exhibiting P.O.S. as one of Hip-Hop’s most talented, most progressive, most revolutionary, most reflective and most introspective artists, and one who won’t soon “settle” for much of anything, be it artistically, emotionally or civically.

Public Enemy ‘Yo! Bum Rush the Show’Opener “Let it Rattle”—which surveys the economic apocalypse, references Mitch Hedberg in a presidential context and bemoans apathy over a reverb-drenched guitar—leaves no question as to where P.O.S.’s head and heart are. The record virtually explodes on the next track, “Drumroll,” a weapons grade compound of cacophonous Jazz drumming and buzzsaw electric guitars topped with P.O.S.’s rapid-fire annunciations. “Goodbye,” a “keep your head up” anthem, is colored by shades of Talib Kweli’s “Get By” thanks to a Lazerbeak beat. “Get Smokes” recalls Yo! Bum Rush the Show-era Public Enemy. Interstellar church-organs imbue “Purexed” with a Cold Vein-esque air. Dirty South-style chants and 808 snare fills juxtapose dithered bass tones and double-time drum loops on “The Basics.” The dirgey title track benefits from the vocal histrionics of Judah Nagler of The Velvet Teen. An array of guitar, xylophone, harmonica samples and cribbed Notorious B.I.G. lines decorate the domestic abuse lament “Been Afraid.” And cuts like the techno-organically minimalist “Optimist” and “Terrorish”—another Cold Veinish joint…but with guitar shreddery—stand out for their inclusion of sandpaper-throated Hardcore hook screaming.

P.O.S. “Drumroll (We’re All Thirsty)”

Did I mention that the Children of Men-inspired video for “Drumroll (We’re All Thirsty)” is one of the illest clips of recent memor? No…I didn’t, did I? Well, it is…And it’s sure to be one of the visual highlights of the year in music once all is said an done. The fact that he and his people had the artistic vision to parlay the funds available to them into such a stunning visual accompaniment—especially in this day and age when pixelized YouTube streams and minuscule media player device screens are the main outlet for such endeavored—to his music is just another I’m impressed. I can’t help but think that in a different era—ya know, ten-plus years ago, when his video actually would’ve been on both Yo! MTV Raps and 120 Minutes, and maybe even have found its way into regular rotation on MTV—a rapper of such passion, imagination and ability would be a big star.

That’s just another aspect of my frustration with modern-day Hip-Hop though. Back in the days—before mega-platinum sales and multi-million dollar videos, when even major label rappers were “underground”—the type of emcees I still get excited about now—largely hard-working, “blue-collar” indieground types who push the envelope but still remain grounded in reality and appeal to the sensibilities of the common folk; like Blu, Serengeti and the Nuk Fam cats to name a few—would’ve been “stars,” and the type of “emcees” that are stars today probably wouldn’t even be making records. I guess there’s some peace of mind in the knowledge that the presence of artists like P.O.S.—and the aforementioned favorites of mine—the Hip-Hop artform, no matter how unbalanced it may seem, still has the potential at least to become better than it’s ever been.
