Romance at Random, Vol. 81: Sylvia Pillow Talk

So, tomorrow is Saint Valentine’s Day, a feast-day intended to honor early Christian martyrs who bore the name Valentinus. Thanks to a misinterpretation of a Chaucer poem, the efforts of 14th century French courtesans and the industriousness of a Massachusetts woman named Esther Howland who essentially founded the modern greeting-card industry, February 14th has also become inextricably associated with love, romance, sex and sensuality. Somehow candy and jewelry also got thrust into the mix, but for our purposes the lovey-dovey stuff is most important.

Romantic love is of course one of the most common subjects addressed in song by musicians and singers. This may be traced back to the troubadours of the Middle Ages whose performance poetry was most frequently concerned with romantic chivalry and who set the mold for journeyman singer/songwriters to come for centuries. Or it could just be a calculated attempt by shallow musicians to get the women in their audience horny in hopes that it’ll help get them laid? Either way, the love song is ubiquitous to the point of being a tiresome cliché to some of the more jaded members of the listening public.

Silk “Freak Me”I myself am an ardent devotee of the love song. And while I’m cool with the more innocent musical declarations of affection of the “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” variety, I have a special place in a my…uh, heart…for tunes of a more…shall we say…passionate nature. Of course I’m talking about that “Between the Sheets” type of groove. I mean, it doesn’t get much more straightforward than that, right? Well, I suppose it did in the ’90s and beyond—particularly after the advent of Hip-Hop—when popular music seems to have gotten crasser with every passing year. But at least there was a certain pubescent thrill to lyrics about licking a girl “up and down,” whereas I don’t think there’s anything even remotely “sexy” about a song simply titled “I Wanna Fuck You.”

They got it right back in the day though, when innuendo and implication were considered raunchy and even the steamiest of songwriters were bound by the strictures of what seems to the backwards observer to have been a more uptight society. The funny thing is, even with all the flesh on display and foul language in the air today we’re lacking the passion they had then. We’re not nearly as “free” as we think we are, pretending to put it all on display, introducing kids of increasingly younger ages to a mechanical caricature of sexuality, but editing references to drugs and name brand products out of songs. Talk about self-righteous! Three-plus decades ago the prevailing morality may have appeared stricter, but there was so much more—a sexual revolution, the demolishing of taboos, the integration of disparate elements of society—bubbling underneath it all.

Sylvia ‘Pillow Talk’It’s true that today very little is left to the imagination, but what’s really disturbing to me is that we’ve collectively lost our imagination. And any relationship counselor will to you that imagination, the ability to introduce new ideas and keep things fresh, is key to the long-term survival of any romance. Sadly, contemporary artists are, by and large, failing in their duties as a romantic partner to romance itself. So for me, old-school music has long been the mistress I pay a visit to when I need to get my rocks off. And for my money, one of the hottest records of all time is Pillow Talk the 1973 LP from Sylvia, perhaps better known to Hip-Hop aficionados by her full name, Sylvia Robinson, the co-owner of the seminal Sugar Hill record label.

Before I ever heard the LP I knew Robinson as the record executive behind some of the earliest Hip-Hop singles, and was aware that she’d been a producer and record artist for many years, but I can’t say I ever knew her or thought of her as sexy. I suppose I should have had an inkling based on her sex-kitten-esque performance as a member of the duo Mickey & Sylvia on the hit 1957 single “Love is Strange,” an oldies staple which made numerous notable film appearances over the years. But growing up I never really associated Sylvia Robinson of Sugar Hill Records fame with the coquettish voice on “Love is Strange” so when I found a battered 45RPM “Pillow Talk” single at a local Salvation Army outlet I was shocked to hear her moaning and sighing in ecstasy as if the song’s slick approximation of Willie Mitchell’s signature sound alone were pushing her to orgasm.

After enjoying the 45 far too much for my own good, and sharing it with whoever I could by tossing it into my “dusty” DJ sets at every opportunity, I knew I just had to hear the Pillow Talk LP in full. Luckily for me it didn’t take much digging, as the album was handily reissued by repress clearinghouse Collectables Records and was readily available on compact disc. Unsurprisingly the disc—which sort-of surprisingly features a busty, cleavage-bearing Sylvia on the front cover, and a reclining, spread-legged Sylvia on the rear cover—proved to be as sophisticatedly sensual and shadily sleazy, not to mention decadently arranged and orchestrated, as the title track.

Shuggie OtisFor the most part the LP follows in the single’s Hi Records-inspired footsteps, favoring an anachronistically gritty sound heavy on haunting keyboards, twangy guitars, dramatic string arrangements and slightly askew drumming. But there’s something very un-Southern about Robinson’s version of Memphis Soul which shares an affinity with the cosmopolitan symphonic sound of Philadelphia Soul and the Disco sound it spawned. And everything has a crepuscular, lo-fi overcast which—when bolstered by the inclusion of primitive drum-machine beats on a handful of cuts—lends the disc an air similar to releases from Sly & The Family Stone or Shuggie Otis. It’s quite honestly the perfect sort of soundtrack for what the kids these days refer to as a “booty call.”

After all, “booty” is what Pillow Talk is all about. No lie, the percolating, drum-machine driven “Didin’t I,” on which she purrs and coos about her prowess all over the track’s silken guitars and trembling strings, she delivers a spoken interlude containing the line “I’m not margarine, but I am a high priced spread” before telling the Grover Washington-esque sax soloist to “blow it baby” on the outro. Almost every tune on the album is slathered in the sounds of her rapturous mock-climaxing, including “Gimme a Little Action,” which is particularly notable for sounding a lot like Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes‘ “You Know How to Make Me Feel so Good” reimagined by a female-fronted Ohio Players, if their chief songwriter were Marvin Gaye. Even the paean to peace “Have You Had Any Lately” twists the titular question into a double entendre at least once.

In this season of love and lovers a record like Pillow Talk is just as integral to the process of seduction as all the fuzzy magnetic bears, lace and sparkle-adorned greeting cards, bunches of flowers, sweet confections, bubbly spirits and blinging finery the commercials have conditioned us to believe are so emblematic of Valentine’s Day. For a broke motherfucker like me it’s probably more important than any of those imminently costly things actually. And in these tough economic times God knows I’m not the only only one in the mood for some lovin’ on the cheap.
