It’s only common sense to get tested for HIV. Common just announced that he is launching a new contest entitled “A Minute” where young people are encouraged to submit lyrics or poems addressing why getting tested for HIV is important. The winning lyrics will be performed by Common on June 27th in a PSA premiering on National HIV Testing Day. The one minute Public Service Announcement is slated to air on MTV2 and mtvU, MTV’s college network. This month we’re all about the ahhhhrt dahhling. Yes, it looks like hip-hop is high-brow. Both the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Detroit have hip hop features up this month. In D.C. you can view “Recognize: Hip Hop and Contemporary Portraiture” which features photos of ?uestlove, Erykah Badu, Talib Kweli, Jean Grae and many more by David Scheinbaum, in addition to paintings by Kehinde Wiley, graffiti by Tim Conlon & Dave Hupp, and poetry by Nikki Giovanni. Detroit presents “Holy Hip-Hop! New Paintings By Alex Melamid” and features paintings of Snoop, Kanye West, and 50 Cent among others. In other art news, our boy Deka reveals three wonderful portraits (Common, Kweli, and Mos Def that were commissioned by NFL player Alan Branch for the crib.
Word is that Immortal Technique will finally be releasing a new album. On Monday, Tech was on Green Lantern’s radio show on Sirius and briefly spoke about the album/mixtape they both are putting out , The 3rd World, through Viper Records. Press has been locked out so far, but tracks will hit the net before they go anywhere else. Supposedly digital distribution and tour is in the works.
