this is the so called face of philadiplomacy. most first time visitors in the tri state insist i give em a tour to the jim/pats steak empire. but truth be told? besides having prime real estate and great iconic lights? both spots are shitty to me because of their racist propaganda they force on you for some mediocre steaks. Joe Vento of course made national news with his anti mexican “english only” signs at Genos Steaks (dont even get me started on the across the street anti Mumia signs at Pats) —on the real? these are the 5 best spots to get your high blood pressure on:
1) tony lukes 2nd and oregon
2) abner’s on 38th and chestnut st.
3) cosmi’s deli on 1501 8th street (where in larry david form they named a sandwich after me that i’d never order…)
4. ishkabbibles on south tween 4th and 3rd
5. genaro’s on 12th and south

At least Pat’s had a Vote Kerry sign up back in 2004. Despite it’s tourist-centric vibe, Jim’s is pretty good. There’s also a good one up in Northeast Philly that’s called Steve’s I think which is pretty good.

Lol, this is the funniest take on Yeezy’s blog with the ikea lamps and mp3 gadgets lol. By the way in response to your enquiry on some forum on OKplayer on who made the Jay Z/Fela Nigerian Gangster mash up; it was a certain Mike Love whom I interviewed last week. Its not up on my blog yet but I would get round to it (i got some finals and just do not have the time to transcribe it).
keep the blog coming ?uest

4 years of college in Philly. Damn right Abner’s is the best cheesesteak in town. Billybob’s (back on 40th & Spruce, I think) wasn’t bad until they shut it down a few years ago.

Oh how I miss Ishkabibbles! Oh the late-night food and beer we’d get at Abner’s after Rock for Hunger Shows in the 80’s. Delassandros? That’s a fall-back if one doesn’t want to make the trek from West Mt Airy to Ishkei’s or Abners. No proper cheesesteaks up here Boston way. They can’t do a soft pretzel right either. And yes, there are serious issues with both Pat’s & Ginos. Much xenophobic hate-speaking.

Hey- it’s Geno’s, not Pat’s, that has all that anti-Mumia crap (ugh, just a veiled way of saying we don’t really like black people much). Pat’s doesn’t seem to push any socio-political agenda of any kind- just cheesesteaks. And they haven’t tarted themselves up in a million watts of tacky lights and signs!

Abners is the real, but, for my money, I gotta give it to Larry’s on 54th and Cityline. Gotta love the “home of the belly filler!”

yo, i’m pretty sure the anti-Mumia signs are also at Geno’s, which is why I’ve never bought a steak there. Pat’s is the shit, however, always much less crowded, the steaks are of premium quality, they’ve got tables to sit at, and I respect their refusal to cater to idiot vegas-type tourists who need to be roped in with ridiculous neon lights. correct me if i’m wrong, but i am pretty sure Geno’s has both the english and mumia signs out front. if you live in the philly area and care about social justice it’s your duty to yell ‘FREE MUMIA!’ every time you drive by, as is my custom.
also, isn’t there a good steak shop north on roosevelt? the name escapes me right now, but i’ve heard good things.

Ha! Thats funny. I like Pat’s but all I can think about is the movie “Do the Right Thing” everytime I go there. I discovered a Black Owned spot in North Philly called Max’s Steaks on Broad and Erie. Besides the gypsy cabs and the dude who looks like Kimbo selling DVDs and CD’s, its great steaks.
