–sidenote: yesterday on okayplayer a 45 second snippet of a 1974 Stevie Wonder throwaway was posted and prompted many of us to keep this shit on repeat for a good 7 hours…..it left me feeling elated and sad at the same time. and then it just left me crazy and mad….to the point i woke up so angry i just had to blog what was initially supposed to be just a response to the post.

and here is my entry some 24 hours later.
i am mad as fuck yo.
1. this shit is under a minute (whoever has that track got the whole shit and need to share that shit not just some “let them eat cake” and give portions.)
2. but then im like listening to this shit as a real song like 4 hours in a row which then makes me a lil crazy.
3. driving to our show yesterday at ucla i put a friend on to this shit and now she listening to this shit hours and hours and hours in a row.
4. now everybody thinks we crazy for listening to a 45 second snippet tape but then the shit spreads like the plot to the video for Radiohead’s “Just”.
im in a corner all hypnotized on my “cant believe this shit” position–and then some nosey cat wanna know what im listening to…and i warn em “just walk away yo…cause you will just be more frustrated”–
and then seconds later they too are like “i cant stop listening to this”
—-im mad because this song had the potential to change my life. these damn chord changes.—like as a musician there are some stevie songs that are etched in my brain just like a tattoo. and it effects everything i do on a hidden level–”love having you around” effects the way i treat hi hats….”all day sucker” (along with bonzo from zepplin) effects the way i now use Ride cymbals as crashes…journey though the secret life of plants for some young black folks their …maybe first or second experience with a “concept album”—i mean steve’s shit is life changing.
which then leads me to my anger:
and again–just like the previous “cant get sad” entry this is not me being mellowdramatic.
but damnit this song makes me wanna do some call to action shit to those involved in the music industry.

i mean there was a point in life in which hip hop REALLY did this to me.
i call it “quincy jones’ goosebump moments” (he explained that the process of making albums with michael jackson was “does this give us goosebumps everytime we hit ‘playback’? good! its ready for the public”
why am i not getting this feeling no more? i know good and damn well why….but i want EVERYBODY to know why….
we can’t afford to no more. as in who is gonna make art records in the age of survival?
simply put….because the 96 model has taken over the entire music industry (the winners won…..the have nots were thrown away to rot and die)—and when the goal is winning. and not changing lives there is a mighty price to pay.
im not gonna name names but for those old enough to remember way back when im sure there is some point that most of you recalled the irony of the atonement that figures we considered “the devil” over 10 years ago are making now for they too consider the music industry “trash” and one even told me that he saw his ascendance as a catch 22 for the entire industry and their evil ways followed suit and fell by the wayside and in turn lost their soul. not saying there was any regret involved…but id never thought id see the day when people would have some sort of regret for the legacy they’ve left behind….for they sorta see how it has robbed the industry.
—and for all you speculative cats…it aint the 2 main celeb figure gods from that era that sorta feel that way either…there were record execs and producers and video directors and former a&r’s who feel the same way.
the black industry in particular got so caught up in the “WE FOUND GOLD!!!! AND DIAMONDS!!!!” syndrome (i mean that in a metaphoric way–although for hip hop you can also put it in a literal way too….)–they never ever thought about how striking and abusing the earth will effect future generations (apply this theory on the 96 creative drought to global warming– and man…your grandkids are gonna be FUCKED if we dont take action like RIGHT NOW)
there was a time when music truly TRULY gave me goosebumps:

lil 5 year old ahmir having anxiety issues with this new experience called “school”. his parents are dropping him off and leaving him with these other kids…the hell is this?!?! there are scary art structures and clay monsters and paint everywhere…..older kids abusing their instruments in some violent way ive never seen before (real talk on the first day of school….only to find out these kids where playing “Freebird” –the second part–….seeing students walking around with long sticks waving back and forward on the ground and wearing dark sunglasses, asking older students with heavy shaking syndromes if they bite…i mean how dare they! im 5 years old. i never heard a russian accent before, or seen a blind person, or anyone with cerebal palsy, or the scary clamation flims of bill plympton—or even knew of the existence of an orange album that looks like the sun and some donuts had a child together and put stevie wonder smack dap in the middle of it. some fancy cursive writing in the middle and now this is my very first homework assignment:

that entire week ms Lewin explored all 4 sides of the record: started off with side four first.

—-i mean you get the point. this shit was eye opening! she was sharing this stuff with us like we were adults!!!—we all sat in front of the stereo mesmerized—and thus started the process and addiction that i have had for the last 32 years.

when you had night before vigils about some shit coming out (the last time was the last great day in hip hop for me….oct 93 the day Wu Tang and Tribe came out on same day)
and when you cut school to get some shit (fear of a black planet)
or when you quit your job to devote more time to an album (nation of millions)
or you commit a crime and steal an album (well…at the time i worked at sam goody) (3 feet high and rising)
or you starve yourself of lunch to save enough money to buy it (1999)
or you shovel an entire block of snow to earn it (parade)
or you get yo worst ass whupping for trying to impress a girl so you steal money for it (rick springfield’s Working Class Dog)
or you almost break your group up cause you know your partner done went in your bag and stole yours (Fantastic Vol 1)
or you buy 25 people within armslength a copy in the wrecka stow (The Listening)
or you purchase it on the day of the apocalypse (The Blueprint)
or you get into it so Onecca will slow drag with you at the halloween dance in the 8th grade (Debarge’s In A Special Way)
those were goosebump moments.

In “Sound vs. Melody” unfortunately Sound has won.
Or i could say Sound has won over SONGS.
Listen to 80% of nowadays Hiphop and R&B and you’ll realize there’s no songs anymore.It’s all just sound walls and/or “phat” beats.Sound and beats have replaced melody and harmonies.Take 90% of the crap Timbaland puts out and you’ll see it’s all about sound.
Where’s the songs ?
All that alleged “soul” that these R&B divas like Rhianna tryin to bring across is just fakery and a poor replacement for the absence of actual SONGS.
This even applies for other genres like your average Rock/Punk/Pop/whatever songs that is on MTV - they just pretend it’s Punk because they make it SOUND like Punk but it isn’t….it just sounds like that but there is no SUBSTANCE.
Maybe that’s what it’s all about. SUBSTANCE is missing.

Because there is MELODY.HARMONIES.M-E-A-N-I-N-G-F-U-L LYRICS.

Substance as in “not a replacement for something you pretend is there but isn’t”.
Kid’s nowadays have no idea what substance is.

They think it’s beats.
Nothing against sound and beats as musical elements but the difference is, SUBSTANTIAL songs use these elements in combination with other elements like harmonies, melodies, lyrics, dynamics, phrasing, whatever.
Most of nowadyas crap just leaves it at either sound or beats.No additional elements, just that.Producers are lazy and sell it to you as the new hot shit.
Bring back the SUBSTANCE.

It was a typical “cleaning” Saturday morning in my household. My mother didn’t cook breakfast that Saturday because we had to clean the house. I had finished my Frosted Flakes, washed the dishes and went into the room I shared with my big sister to begin cleaning. My mother got on me constantly to dust my end table because my asthma would always flare up around dusty surfaces (this was her truth not the ACTUAL truth). I know it was warm out because my pops was hanging out of the living room window with newspaper and windex in his hand. I came out of my room and walked back into to the kitched to look under the faux dark wood cabinet under the sink for an old Fruit of the Loom T-Shirt (our dust rags) when I heard…”I came in the door, I said it before, I never let the mic magnetize me no more…” I literally stopped short as if I had seen a ghost. I will never forget what that song did to me, what that song STILL does to me. Rakim changed the way I felt about hip-hop because he was lyrically too much to handle. Talk about fucking goosebumps??
Without becoming a preacher in a matter of 1000 words or less…lyrical content is lacking heavily right now. I have always been open to new sounds and new music. I always say there really isn’t much harm in emcees rhyming about their clothes and their dough as long as they set the bar high lyrically. Look at Little Brother’s “Good Clothes”. Is the song about clothes? Yes it is. But does it sound like “White Tee”? Nah not at all. It’s a dope ass song and such an original take on what it means, or what it meant, to be F-R-E-S-H. I mean the originality of good lyrical content is absent in music today.
But we have become our parents people. My mother thought, and still thinks Prince’s Purple Rain album was some sexual exploitative garbage (especially Darling Nikki, which was and still is the SHIT!) and would never be on the level of The O’Jays or The Chi-Lites or whoever she thought was dope. D4L, of Laffy Taffy fame, to ME, will never be be dope like EPMD or De La (ahhhhh…”I got the sheep in my eyes so I can’t sleep”. Marry me Trugoy!!!!
“5-0 came to my mic check, telling me I left lacerations around my mic’s neck”…Pos WTF??? Please stop making me cream my Target panties). Yes we do like some of today’s emcees/musicians but that is because they are VERY reminiscent of what gave us the original goosebumps, which is cool. And I won’t even go into the lack of ill music as opposed to just noise that lacks originality. Primarily because I don’t know the proper terms, chords and shit like that. But also because YA’LL KNOW WHAT THE HELL I’M TALKING ABOUT!!!!

I got a couple of those goosebump moments too… refusing to leave my friend’s house because I wanted to keep listening to that album (SOTT)… getting two copies of “Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough” to mix on my new Gemini mixer… and trying to understand the tumultuous emotions associated with the sounds and lyrics that started with “Mary wants to be a Superwoman.” Yeah, I feel you, Ahmir. I had to work really damn hard to get that feeling back you’re talking about. It keeps escaping me and then running back to me over the course of time, but it always does come back.
I got serious fuckin’ problems right now in my life — shit that nobody wants to hear about because don’t anybody except me and my fuckin’ self care anyways. In an small german mailorder catalogue, the titlestory was about the new Roots-album and ?uestlove said in the interview that his goal with it was to make it be the first 10th album of a rap artist that is actually good.

Now, am I dumb or isn’t Rising Down just their 8th album?
And anyway, Jay-Z reached that goal before them with American Gangster (favorite rap album 2007 on allmusic & pitchfork; I count The Dynasty as solo album)
And NaS will probably be the next one (I count The Lost Tapes, NaS due to Juli)

I think there’d be alot more goosebump moments if people never forgot that r&b stands for rhythm and blues, not for some young dude/girl/group thereof whose got a slick voice and hot dance moves.
I was reminded of this by the reissue of Otis Blue last month. Nobody today puts that kind of care into their albums anymore. I mean, the man ARRANGED all his horns himself.
Only person in r&b whose come close as of late is D’angelo…

Stevie, EWF, Quincy, the ROOTS… I’ve experienced those “goosebump moments” from these artists consistently, as well as a few others not so consistently… things changed when the emphasis shifted from making good music to making big money on any kind of “music”…
Fortunately there are those who are still focused on making good music, and are able to inspire more of those “goosebump moments”… big ups to the Baltimore based group FERTILE GROUND… those not knowing should know…

Hey Quest,
I wanted to first comment on the Stevie Snippet: it’s brilliant and definitely goosebump-inducing! I hope you (or some other dedicated fans, but since you’re a giant in the industry, you might actually be able to convince some people) can get Stevie to release some of these unreleased gems from the early days. As someone else on here said, the world needs to hear the music! (On a personal note, I have been obsessively listening to the snippet and my OCD is kicking in: the end of the song is out there somewhere, but I can’t find it, so it’s unacceptably unfinished. I went to a local record store in Ephrata called Record Connection–which has a vast selection and great prices–and checked Stevie b-sides with no luck…)
Also–I wanted to let you know that I’ve been getting comments on my weblog from confounded Roots fans who had their own “goosebump” moments when listening to your great performance on Saturday at Penn’s Landing, but nonetheless were perplexed by the inscrutable, dreadful Deerhoof. funny you mention 3′ HIgh(that and nations of millions were two of the first cd purchases in my lifetime). I remember buying that CD at tower records on my walk from the patco stop in the gallery (yeah i was an early suburban hiphop advocate) out to marian anderson gym for hoop practice for the sonny hill league. as i tore off the plastic, i swore the cd smelled like daisies.
91 College. Breakup with the high school squeeze and. Enter Pearl Jam “10″ aka Mookie Blaylock. my initial first all out foray into rock n’ roll sans an obsession with kiss in the first grade. (yeah no music appreciation classes for this son of a relatively musically unaffected big five baller “jock” to be who quietly wrote rhyme in his notebooks and sold dimes to buy a boss dr. rhythm in the tenth grade.
92′ This emcee cat rolls into our dorm lobby to play some demo tracks for my hall mates from germantown. a few months later Tariq and Malik open for the FU-Schnickens (Fu who??!!!?) and tariq proceeds to destroy the flatbush fedex commercial style of pak and wok (whatever their names were) in a freestyle session at an after party off campus. The following fall i catch an article in the city paper that the roots are pulling stakes and heading across the pond to make it happen. ( like six degrees of the roots i later ended up roomin with some dude who was tight with your old keyboard player….trned out dude once knew marble, tile and renovating shells in s. philly like he knows the ebony and ivory.(pre-take the money and run with the rap bubble gum stage obviously)

i didn’t truly get exposed to stevie wonder until first hanging out aand later spending an unemployed/rave candy distributorsummer helping a friend and mentor (check out his book of poetry “totem” by Gregory Pardlo) run his grand pop’s little jazz club in merchantville. (when the club finally shut down younger brother Robby used it as a local rehearsal spot pre-grammy nomination timeframe).
Not only exposure to greater depths of stevie but that venue and greg’s grand pop and the session/house players enlightened me quality/significance of big band broadening my quasi wanna bohemian grasp of a stack or two of miles and coltrane compilations and occassional tune into 90.1 temple radio.
Seeing/feeling/listening to those men come together and play in that little out of the way spot was priceless culture and worth every night i worked behind that bar for paltry ass tips.
i could go on and on and on……
I do have faith in that there is and always will be that cross section of listeners, artists and upstart business folk breaking boundaries and pushing envelopes allowing for quality find its way through to an audience and some level of a livelihood.
another catalyst like stevie. not likely yet creative music with integrity/soul nonetheless.
think about it, imagine coming up in the 40-70s era and listening to the thelonius monks and roland kirks of the world only to see “playtone” esque labels (see: Movie “the Wonders”) gouging at the heart, foundation and merit of mutiple forms of music spawned from the socially and creatively tense fusion of musical cross sections throughout the country and brought to market by the blue note esque labels of the time.
ain’t nothin’ changed but the ozone layer and the interface.
future goose bumps likely to resemble a series of zeros and ones.
i’m just sayin’.
