most hip hop purists love to debate the day that changed hip hop forever.
i’ve heard Raising Hell changed the game cause it caught the attention of the white dollar
i’ve heard Licensed To Ill changed the game cause white people caught the attention of the black dollar.
i’ve heard that Please Hammer Dont Hurt Em changed the game cause it caught the attention of radio.
i’ve heard that The Chronic changed the game cause it caught the attention of critics.
i’ve heard Ready To Die changed the game cause it caught the attention of pretty much every credible mc that followed in its footsteps ever since (”hey nas”….”hello brooklyn”)
well that “almost” didn’t happen.
i just got my hands on the original mastered version of RTD and i have to say. that as a business man? Puff knew what the hell he was doing.
now granted to my stubborn ears back in 94 i was crying “the f@#$ is this wanna be Chronic, chicks singing RNB mess, played out loops slowed down shit?!”—-i mean Big was killing it. but i always wondered why “Big Poppa” couldn’t go a step further with a more obscure loop than the now overdone “Between The Sheets”—
it would take me 15 years of dj’n to figure that one out.
the discoveries i made on the OG ready to die sorta make me think like the scenario michael and quincy went with once they tweeked the mess outta Thriller. and just like that album i can see a refreshing difference it makes once you trim the fat.
not to say that the fat they cut was all the way disposable….
there are some gems throughout.
“but i understand”
-chris rock.

I like it. Not better than the original, but I like it. Didn’t Puff get on Primo about “Unbelievable” too? I think Primo talked about it in XXL’s The Making Of Ready To Die, saying how he had to go back and tweak some stuff for Puffy to approve.
Anyway, thanks for sharing.

“RTD” was one of the first hip hop albums i ever bought (im a baby i know) but as an avid reader of liner notes, it also opened the doors to diggin crates and finding brakes and samples.
i guess i have puff to thank and his new tv reality show - for teaching me that this industry is no joke.

I don’t know Quest I understand you on how Puff made Big more appealing to the masses and what not. With business is all about the bottom line. But I was heated with that Juicy shit. Why wasn’t party and bullshit on that album. It’s like Big had that Brppklyn fire and Puff lowered the heat a bit.
He represented a certain asethetic and mind state(like Schooly D). He was Brooklyn’s own diamond in the rough. We did not need him remixed, polished or laced with a partial California/midwest Swagger. We had a distinct style of our own. Great art is just that, when it’s raw and untampered with.
That album is a classic for sure. I bumped it heavy for like four moths. But It had the makings of a full soundtrack to a time and place. Where I grew up and knew all to well, but never got caught up in. M.O.P bring that shit all day and so did Biggie pre-Puff. No hatred on Puff he knows what the fuck he is doing. But me personally I prefer Once Upon a Time in America versus Scarface. In my opinion Harlem cats shouldn’t be coaching Brooklyn cats. Refer to Dame & Jay. We are not just players we are the franchise. I would love to hear the original mastered version of Ready To Die.

Can I ask 2 questions…
1) What the eff is Diddy’s new assistant show all about??? Please help me understand
2) If I’d rather listen to the MACE debut, does that mean I truly don’t know hip hop? I call bullshit.
As a teen when this whitey heard Raising Hell, I wore the cassette tape out and had Dad wondering if I was his son.

quest, you are right on. When this unmastered version released, i was so excited. prob listened to it 20 times now. Machine Gun Funk was prob the only song where I would’ve switched it out with the released album version. Puff knew the sound/vibe of the album and what he had to change to make it there. Its like watching a DVD with unrated, undeleted scenes and then you realize why they weren’t in the original.

Don’t forget the original Juicy version that Pete Rock had done. It has much better drums if you ask me. Find it on Youtube if you haven’t already heard it.

WOW!!!! RTD sounds unfinished. Would we have been all up on it??? I think this would’ve gone straight “underground.”
