Firstly, I am very proud of the accomplishments made by THE ROOTS. I do have one comment/question,a hip-hop group titled THE ROOTS I would think would know the origin of the word “PICNIC” PIC-NIC, PIC-A-NIC PICK-A-NIC, PICK-A-NI_ _ ER… shall I continue? During slavery a social past time was to go to a park or field which had (shade trees) and spend time with the family eating ,playing, and watching the entertainment. The entertainment I speak of was to PICK A NI_ _ ER and hang them. Hence we now have PIC_A_NIC or picnic . I received this enlightenment from believe it or not a white women in South Carolinia who said and I quote ” I’m surprised black people don’t know where the word picnic came from I mean they are always on the soap box about something or someone that has wronged them” i overheard this women talking to her young child. i then asked where did the word come from and thats when I received my education; since then my family eats in the park. We no longer PICNIC. Again I’m very suprised and disappointed THE ROOTS Public Relations people didn’t know this nor any of the Band. Educate to Elevate Keep up the good work … and no more PICNICS

Check out the Wikipedia article, I would not trust white woman from SC as a valid source of information. It was a fake email hoax in the 1990s.

    Hey Roots,
I’m a longtime fan (back to the mid 90s, anyway) who has seen you in concert twice. The last time I saw you, at Verizon Hall in Philly, you were great, but the experience was marred by the opening act, Deerhoof. I have written an Open Letter to The Roots re: Deerhoof on my weblog to address some of my frustrations, which can be accessed directly at:

I’ll look forward to hearing your thoughts!
