I am commenting on the DC show 14 MAY…you all were awesome. I wish you could have played longer. Black Thought killed the mike!!! Every time I see the Roots I am truly amazed. Please keep doing what you are doing, your music has definitely has a effect on everyone who hears it!

Paula, I was so happy to find your site. I hope you can help. I’ m one of those people that seems to love the background music that I can never find. I know all of the songs in the Transformer Movie, but the music that I really want to find is the music(without lyrics) that plays, for instance when Optimus Prime, at the beginning of the movie is telling the story of the Cube, and during part of the Qutar scenes. I listen to music from all over the place. I’m into a lot of indie rock, I’m excavating Velvet Underground-related releases, I’m checking out Caetano Veloso and the rest of his Tropicalia peers.

But I’m so inspired by and thankful for this all movement you all are a part of. I mean, I feel like in the same way Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston and Nina Simone were all seen as part of the same national black movement (Harlem, of course) I think that attention should really be brought to you all as geniuses and leaders.

And beyond just calling it the fucking Neo Soul movement. It’s so much bigger than that.

With that said, I caught Erykah+TheRoots in Chicago a week or so ago. And I don’t know if they crammed Rising Down and Game Theory in the first fifteen minutes, but I was disappointed. I got there late (fuckin state street traffic…) and they were finishing up Long Time, which is a great track. But after that it was a long medley of hip-hop songs and then solos and tracks from Things Fall Apart. And The Seed.

And it was all very entertaining. But I didn’t see the dangerous Roots that are present on RD and GT. And Erykah (who was fantastic) found a way to fuse the new and the old, the party, and the political, the angry, and the celebratory throughout her set. And it seemed like The Roots were just doing kind of like a victory lap aimed at pleasing all the people who came to see “On and On” and “You Got Me” over and over again.

As always, very technically sound. Everyone was on point and having a good time. But I guess I wanted some fury in there too from The Roots.

Does ayone remember promise rings? Well they’ve made a comeback, mostly with the teen generation. They symbolize commitment, especially for couples too young to get married. They can also symbolize an unbreakable friendship bond. A gift of these and a buch of fresh blooms will go a long way in any relationship, even friendship.

I saw the Roots/EB in DC on May 14th as well. I was quite disappointed with the limited time the Roots had on stage. I too got their late thinking that I was going to have a replicate of the Roots at Constitution Hall, Washington DC in 2007….(of the 7 times I have seen the Roots that was the BEST show hands down- the one with the fellows from Philly on the horns where they walked on stage from the middle of the crowd!!) I was underwhelmed by EB’s performance, and rightfully so, I was there for the Legendary Roots Crew!! I look forward to seeing a show with the Roots a HEADLINERS, as it should only be. I respect EB and the rest of the movement but there is a power that only the Roots can bring to a stage- needless to say, this combination show was lacking!!
